United States District Court For The Eastern District Of Illinois
The United States District Court for the Eastern District of Illinois (in case citations, E.D. Ill.) is a former federal district court for the state of Illinois. The court was established on March 3, 1905, by 33 Stat. 992. The Northern and Southern Districts had been established on February 13, 1855. The statute establishing the Eastern District specified the counties to be included in that District as follows: :Kankakee, Iroquois, Ford, Vermilion, Champaign, Piatt, Moultrie, Douglas, Edgar, Shelby, Coles, Clark, Cumberland, Effingham, Fayette, Marion, Clay, Jasper, Crawford, Lawrence, Richland, Clinton, Saint Clair, Washington, Jefferson, Wayne, Edwards, Wabash, White, Hamilton, Franklin, Perry, Randolph, Monroe, Gallatin, Saline, Williamson, Jackson, Hardin, Pope, Johnson, Union, Alexander, Pulaski, and Massac. Melvin Price Federal Building And United States Courthouse
The Melvin Price Federal Building and United States Courthouse, historically known as the United States Post Office and Courthouse, is a historic federal building located at 750 Missouri Avenue in East St. Louis, Illinois. The building served as the city's main post office and still serves as the courthouse of the Southern District of Illinois; it is named for U.S. Representative Charles Melvin Price. Supervising Architect James Knox Taylor designed the Beaux-Arts building in 1907; construction began the following year and was completed in 1909. The building's design features a projecting pavilion above the front entrance with four pairs of columns supporting a pediment; the columns frame a three-bay arcade which once housed the courtroom windows. Quoins at the corners and on projecting elements, alternating arched and pedimented windows on the second floor, and a cornice with a balustrade also decorate the building. William George Juergens (September 7, 1904 – December 7, 1988) was an American attorney and jurist who served as a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Illinois and the United States District Court for the Southern District of Illinois. Early life and education Born in Steeleville, Illinois, Juergens received an Artium Baccalaureus degree from Carthage College in 1925 and a Juris Doctor from the University of Michigan Law School in 1928. Career He was in private practice in Chester, Illinois from 1928 to 1938, also serving as a city attorney of Chester from 1930 to 1938. Francis Marion Wright (August 5, 1844 – July 15, 1917) was a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Illinois and previously was a judge of the Court of Claims. Early life Born in Adams County, Ohio, Wright was the son of James and Elizabeth (Copple) Wright. He was educated in Bentonville, Ohio and at the Ohio Valley Academy in Decatur, Ohio, and his parents hoped he would study medicine and become a doctor. Military service In 1861, Wright enlisted in the Union Army for the American Civil War, becoming a private in Company I, 39th Ohio Infantry. He advanced through the ranks of corporal, sergeant, and sergeant major before receiving his commission as a second lieutenant, and served in several battles in the Western Theater of the American Civil War, including the Atlanta Campaign. Wright participated in more than 40 engagements, and was wounded at the Battle of Atlanta. He was discharged at the end of the war in 1865. ...
