United States D-class Submarine
The United States D-class submarines were a trio of submarines built for the United States Navy in the first decade of the 20th century. Groton is a town in New London County, Connecticut located on the Thames River. United States L-class Submarine
The United States L-class submarines were a class of 11 submarines built 1914–1917, and were the United States Navy's first attempt at designing and building ocean-going submarines. At the time there was a significant gap in long-range submarine design compared with other major navies. The ''Group 2'' L-boats designed by Lake Torpedo Boat Company (''L-5'' through ''L-8'') were built to slightly different specifications from the other ''Group 1'' L-boats (which were designed by Electric Boat) and are sometimes considered a separate L-5 class. The New London Ship and Engine Company (NELSECO) was established in Groton, Connecticut as a subsidiary of the Electric Boat Company to manufacture diesel engines. History Electric Boat acquired a license to manufacture MAN diesels, probably in 1909. These were initially manufactured by the Fore River Shipyard of Quincy, Massachusetts, where most of Electric Boat's early submarines were built under subcontract. NELSECO was established in Groton to take over diesel manufacturing from Fore River when difficulties were encountered, finishing the work on engines begun by Fore River. The draft or draught of a ship's hull is the vertical distance between the waterline and the bottom of the hull (keel). The draught of the vessel is the maximum depth of any part of the vessel, including appendages such as rudders, propellers and drop keels if deployed.
