United Presbyterian Church Of Canehill
The United Presbyterian Church of Canehill is a historic church on Main Street in Canehill, Arkansas. Built in 1891, it is the only surviving church building in the small community. It is a brick structure with a cruciform plan with steeply-pitched gable roofs, large Gothic-arched stained glass windows, and a tower with an octagonal belfry topped by a shingled steeple. Canehill was originally settled in 1828 by a Presbyterian group, and eventually supported three separate Presbyterian congregations over the course of the 19th century. These congregations were reunited into this building in 1905. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Renovation In 2019, Historic Cane Hill Inc, a local historic preservation non-profit organization, entered a purchase/use agreement with the church. Canehill, Arkansas
Canehill (also known as Cane Hill and Boonsboro) is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Washington County, Arkansas, United States. It was first listed as a CDP in the 2020 census with a population of 74. The community is located in the Ozark Mountains on the outskirts of the Northwest Arkansas metropolitan area. One of the most historic communities in the state, Canehill contains seventeen listings on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The Cane Hill College began operations in 1834, which led to the rapid growth and development of the community as a center of higher education. The college and community suffered during the American Civil War, and was bypassed by the railroad, which chose a route through Lincoln. Recently, restoration and preservation of many historic buildings has been undertaken by a nonprofit organization, Historic Cane Hill Inc. The National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) is the United States federal government's official list of districts, sites, buildings, structures and objects deemed worthy of preservation for their historical significance or "great artistic value". Graining
Graining is the practice of imitating wood grain on a non-wood surface, or on relatively undesirable wood surface, in order to give it the appearance of a rare or higher quality wood, thereby increase that surface's aesthetic appeal. Graining was common in the 19th century, as people were keen on imitating hard, expensive woods by applying a superficial layer of paint onto soft, inexpensive woods or other hard surfaces. Graining can be accomplished using either rudimentary tools or highly specialized tools. A specialized thick brush used for graining is often called a mottler. Fan brushes, floggers, softening brushes, texture combs and even fingers are used to create various effects. The painting is carried out in layers, with the first layer being a base.
