United Kingdom–Ireland Natural Gas Interconnectors
The United Kingdom, Ireland and the Isle of Man are interconnected by five subsea and overland gas pipelines. These provide facilities for the transfer of natural gas from sources in Scotland and England to consumers in Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, and the Isle of Man. Background The Republic of Ireland had a supply of natural gas from the Kinsale Head offshore field which was in production from 1978 to 2020. As production declined so further sources of natural gas were identified and assessed. One approach was to abstract gas from the British National Grid’s National Transmission System (NTS) in Scotland. The NTS is fed from gas fields on the UK Continental Shelf; from Europe (Belgium, the Netherlands and Norway); and as Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) obtained internationally. Ervia, previously known as Bord Gáis or Bord Gáis Éireann (; meaning "Gas Board of Ireland"), is a multi-utility company distributing Pipeline transport, pipeline natural gas, water industry, water services and Dark Fibre, dark fibre services in Republic of Ireland, Ireland. The state-owned company has built an extensive network across Ireland. In 2014 the Bord Gáis Energy division was sold to a consortium led by Centrica, and the Bord Gáis name was transferred as part of the sale. Bord Gáis Éireann was therefore renamed Ervia in June 2014 and as a result no longer sells gas directly to customers. Ireland is a net energy importer. Ireland's import dependency decreased to 85% in 2014 (from 89% in 2013). The cost of all energy imports to Ireland was approximately €5.7 billion, down from €6.5 billion (revised) in 2013 due mainly to falling oil and, to a lesser extent, gas import prices. Consumption of all fuels fell in 2014 with the exception of peat, renewables and non-renewable wastes. Final consumption of electricity in 2017 was 26 TWh, a 1.1% increase on the previous year. Renewable electricity generation, consisting of wind, hydro, landfill gas, biomass and biogas, accounted for 30.1% of gross electricity consumption. This is a list of current and former electricity-generating power stations in the British Crown Dependencies. The Crown Dependencies are the Bailiwick of Jersey, the Bailiwick of Guernsey and the Isle of Man. They are British Islands but are not part of the United Kingdom.
