Union of Forces for Change and Democracy (French: ''Union des forces pour le changement et la démocratie, UFCD'') is a Chadian rebel group which split from the UFDD The Union of Forces for Democracy and Development is the largest group of Chadian rebel forces opposed to former President Idriss Déby. It was formed in October 2006 under the leadership of Mahamat Nouri. The group consists of: * United Front f ... in March 2008. The group was founded by Adouma Hassaballah Jedareb who wanted a greater autonomy from Mahamat Nouri, leader of UFDD. Adouma was member of FRPN, later FUC. After FUC's unsuccessful attack on N'Djamena, he took numerous Ouaddaïan combatants from FUC and led them to join UFDD. In April 2008 the group had around 2000 militants. The Union of Forces for Democracy and Development is the largest group of Chadian rebel forces opposed to former President Idriss Déby. It was formed in October 2006 under the leadership of Mahamat Nouri. The group consists of: * United Front for Democratic Change * Democratic Revolutionary Council * Union of Forces for Progress and Democracy History On 22 October 2006, the newly formed Union attacked the eastern Chad town of Goz Beida. Although it was initially unclear if they succeeded or if the government was able to defend the city, it later became clear that the Union had captured the city, along with several other cities like Am Timan. Mahamat Nouri
General Mahamat Nouri (born 1947) is a Chadian insurgent leader who currently commands the Union of Forces for Democracy and Development (UFDD). A Muslim from northern Chad, he began his career as a FROLINAT rebel, and when the group's Second Army split in 1976 he sided with his kinsman Hissène Habré. As Habré's associate he obtained in 1978 the first of the many ministerial positions in his career, becoming Interior Minister in a coalition government. When Habré reached the presidency in 1982, Nouri was by his side and played an important role in the regime. Following Habré's downfall in 1990, Nouri passed his allegiance to his successor, Idriss Déby, under whom he rose once again to great prominence, remaining in the cabinet without interruption from 1995 to 2004. After that he was sent as Chad's ambassador to Saudi Arabia: while in that country he broke with Déby in 2006, joining armed opposition against him. Popular Front for National Rebirth ( French: ''Front populaire pour la renaissance nationale,'' ''FPRN'') is a rebel group operating in Tissi area, where borders of CAR, Chad and Sudan meet. It was founded in 2001 by Adoum Yacoub ‘Kougou’, a veteran of Chadian armed opposition groups. The group begun fighting in Darfur area along Sudanese Liberation Movement during the Darfur war. For most of its existence it operated in southeastern Chad. It is mostly composed of Ouaddaïan but it also has Masalit and Tama combatants. Its fighters are considered to have significant military experience. Activity In 2001, the group was formed and begun fighting alongside SLM in West Darfur but it was pushed out by Sudanese Armed Forces into Chadian territory. In late 2007 FRPN joined UFR but it remained largely autonomous, it left UFR only several month after joining it. During its time in UFR, FRPN received 50–60 vehicles from Sudan. : The Battle of N'Djamena was a battle between the forces of the revolutionary United Front for Democratic Change (UFCD) and the military of Chad that occurred on 13 April 2006 when rebel forces launched an assault on the capital of Chad in the pre-dawn hours, attempting to overthrow the government of President Idriss Déby Itno from their bases an estimated thousand miles east. The battle occurred just months after serious Chad-Sudan tensions ended with the signing of the Tripoli Agreement.
