Unimog
The Unimog (pronunciation in American English: ''YOU-nuh-mog''; British English: ''YOU-knee-mog''; German: , ) is a Daimler Truck line of multi-purpose, highly offroad capable AWD vehicles produced since 1948. Utilizing engine-driven power take-offs (PTO) Unimogs have operated in the roles of tractors, light trucks and lorries, for snow plowing, in agriculture, forestry, rural firefighting, in the military, even in rallying and as recreational vehicles. The frame is designed to be a flexible part of the suspension, not to carry heavy loads. Overview Conceived in 1944 in response to the Morgenthau Plan, former Daimler-Benz airplane engine engineers developed prototypes under occupation. The Unimog 405 is a vehicle of the Unimog-series by Mercedes-Benz, made by Daimler Truck, Daimler Truck Holding AG.The Unimog 405's manufacturer changed its name three times throughout the Unimog 405's development phase and production run, and split off its truck business in 2019. Originally, the manufacturer's name was ''Daimler-Benz''. From 1997 until 2007, the manufacturer was called ''DaimlerChrysler'', and from 2007 until 2022, the name was ''Daimler''. Since October 2019, the truck business has been called ''Daimler Truck Holding''. A road–rail vehicle or a rail–road vehicle is a dual-mode vehicle which can operate both on rail tracks and roads. They are also known as two-way vehicles (), hi-rail (from ''highway'' and ''railway'', or variations such as high-rail, HiRail, ), and rail and road vehicles. MB-trac
MB-trac is a range of agricultural tractors developed and produced from 1973 until 1991 by Mercedes-Benz Group, formerly known as Daimler-Benz. It is based on the ''trac'' design principle for tractors and shares its drivetrain with the Unimog. Mercedes-Benz offered the MB-trac in light duty, medium-duty, and heavy-duty versions in four different type series: 440, 441, 442, and 443. About 41,000 MB-tracs were made by former Daimler-Benz, before the manufacture was sold to Werner Forsttechnik in the early 1990s, who developed the WF trac skidder from the MB-trac. Portal Axle
A portal axle (or portal gear lift) is an off-road vehicle suspension and drive technology where the axle tube or the half-shaft is offset from – usually above – the center of the wheel hub and where driving power is transferred to each wheel via a simple gearbox, built onto each hub. It gives two advantages: ground clearance is increased, particularly beneath the low-slung differential housing of the main axles — and secondly, any hub reduction gearing allows the axle half shafts to drive the same power but at reduced torque (by using higher shaft speed). This reduces load on the axle crown wheel and differential. A power take-off or power takeoff (PTO) is one of several methods for taking power from a power source, such as a running engine, and power transmission#Mechanical power, transmitting it to an application such as an attached implement or separate machine. Gaggenau
Gaggenau () is a town in the district of Rastatt, in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It is located some 8 km northeast of Baden-Baden. History Gaggenau was first mentioned in local records in 1243 under the name "Gaggenaw". The present district of Bad Rotenfels is even older, having been mentioned in a royal donation letter in 1041. The Dakar Rally () or simply "The Dakar" (), formerly known as the Paris–Dakar Rally (), is an annual rally raid organised by the Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO). It is an off-road endurance event traversing terrain much tougher than conventional rallying, and the vehicles used are typically true off-road vehicles and motorcycles, rather than modified on-road vehicles. Mercedes-Benz has been producing buses since 1895 in Mannheim in Germany.
