Unheimliche Geschichten (1919 Film)
''Unheimliche Geschichten'' ( ''Uncanny Stories''), titled ''Eerie Tales'' in English, is a 1919 German silent anthology film directed by Richard Oswald and starring Conrad Veidt. The film is split into five stories: ''The Apparition'', ''The Hand'', ''The Black Cat'' (based on the Edgar Allan Poe short story), ''The Suicide Club'' (based on the Robert Louis Stevenson short story) and ''Der Spuk'' (''The Spectre''). A remake, also directed by Oswald, was released in 1932. Plot At midnight in a closed antiquarian bookshop, three figures – Death, the Devil and the Harlot – step out of paintings and read five macabre stories. The first story is ''The Apparition'', about a man (Veidt) and a woman (Berber) who check into a hotel. When the woman vanishes, everyone there denies she ever existed. Richard Oswald
Richard Oswald (5 November 1880 – 11 September 1963) was an Austrian film director, producer, screenwriter, and father of German-American film director Gerd Oswald. Early career Richard Oswald, born in Vienna as Richard W. Ornstein, began his career as an actor on the Viennese stage. He made his film directorial debut at age 34 with ''The Iron Cross'' (1914) and worked a number of times for Jules Greenbaum. In 1916, Oswald set up his own production company in Germany, writing and directing most of his films himself. His pre-1920 efforts include such literary adaptations as ''The Picture of Dorian Gray'' (1917), '' Peer Gynt'' (1919), the once scandalous ''Different from the Others'' (1919) and ''Around the World in Eighty Days'' (1919). Oswald directed nearly 100 films. ''The Suicide Club'' is a collection of three 19th century detective fiction short stories by Robert Louis Stevenson that combine to form a single narrative. First published in the ''London Magazine ''in 1878, they were collected and republished in the first volume of the ''New Arabian Nights''. The trilogy introduces the characters of Prince Florizel of Bohemia and his sidekick Colonel Geraldine. In this cycle they infiltrate a secret society of people intent on losing their lives. It has been described as: "The Prince's investigation of the macabre club and its criminally inclined president makes for one of Stevenson’s most exciting and suspenseful tales."
