''Underground U.S.A.'' is a 1980 feature-length underground film directed by Eric Mitchell and starring Patti Astor, Rene Ricard, Jackie Curtis, Cookie Mueller, Tom Wright, John Lurie, and Taylor Mead. Eric Mitchell (filmmaker)
Eric Mitchell is a French born writer, director and actor who moved to downtown New York City in the early 1970s. He has acted in many No Wave films such as '' Permanent Vacation'' (1980) by Jim Jarmusch, but is best known for his own films that are usually writing and directed by him: ''Kidnapped'', ''Red Italy'', ''Underground U.S.A.'' and '' The Way It Is or Eurydice in the Avenues'', starring Steve Buscemi, Vincent Gallo, Mark Boone Junior and Rockets Redglare. Mitchell worked out of New York City's sordid East Village area in conjunction with Colab and other performance artists and noise musicians. There he created a series of scruffy, deeply personal, short Super 8mm and 16mm films in which he combined darkly sinister images to explore the manner in which the individual is constrained by society. The Mudd Club was a nightclub located at 77 White Street in the TriBeCa neighborhood of Lower Manhattan in New York City. It operated from 1978 to 1983 as a venue for underground music and counterculture events. It was opened by Steve Maas, Diego Cortez and Anya Phillips. History The Mudd Club was founded by filmmaker Steve Maas, art curator Diego Cortez, and downtown punk scene figure Anya Phillips in 1978. Maas named the club after Samuel Alexander Mudd, the physician who treated John Wilkes Booth in the aftermath of Abraham Lincoln's assassination. To secure the space for the venue, which was a loft owned by artist Ross Bleckner, Maas described the future venue as essentially an art bar cabaret, like Mickey Ruskin's One University Place, itself based on Ruskin's successful Max's Kansas City. James Robert Jarmusch (; born January 22, 1953) is an American film director and screenwriter. John Lurie
John Lurie (born December 14, 1952) is an American musician, painter, actor, director, and producer. He co-founded the Lounge Lizards jazz ensemble; has acted in 19 films, including '' Stranger than Paradise'' and '' Down by Law''; has composed and performed music for 20 television and film works; and he produced, directed, and starred in the '' Fishing with John'' television series. In 1996 his soundtrack for ''Get Shorty'' was nominated for a Grammy Award, and his album ''The Legendary Marvin Pontiac: Greatest Hits'' has been praised by critics and fellow musicians. Since 2000, he has suffered from symptoms attributed to chronic Lyme disease and has focused his attention on painting. His art has been shown in galleries and museums around the world. Patti Astor (born ca. 1950) is an American performer who was a key actress in New York City underground films of the 1970s, and the East Village art scene of the 1980s, and involved in the early popularizing of hip hop. She co-founded the instrumental contemporary art gallery, Fun Gallery. Biography Patti Astor grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio where she was a charter member of the Cincinnati Civic Ballet. Her adventurous spirit however took her to New York City at the age of eighteen (in 1968) to Barnard College but she soon dropped out to take a leadership role in the anti-Vietnam war group SDS (Students for a Democratic Society). She spent two and a half years as a young revolutionary. At the end of that war she traveled the United States and Europe with her dance act, ''A Diamond As Big As The Ritz''. Harold Thomas Wright (born November 29, 1952) is an American television and theatre actor. Early life Wright was born on November 29, 1952, in Englewood, New Jersey. Career Wright has appeared in over 40 stage productions on and off Broadway. He began his acting career as an original member of The People's Light and Theater Company outside of Philadelphia. Wright also spent four years at the National Playwrights Conference and two summers at the Sundance Institute.
