David Underdown
David Edward Underdown (19 August 1925 – 26 September 2009) was a historian of 17th-century England, English politics and culture and Professor Emeritus at Yale University. Born at Wells, Somerset, Underdown was educated at The Blue School, Wells, the Blue School and Exeter College, Oxford. The books ''Revel, Riot, and Rebellion'' and ''Fire from Heaven'' won prizes from the North American Conference on British Studies and the New England Historical Association. After retiring from Yale in 1996, Underdown wrote a well-received book about the history of cricket in the Hambledon Club, Hambledon era, ''Start of Play''. According to ''The Guardian'': : His most famous study, ''Pride's Purge: Politics in the Puritan Revolution'' (1971), is a narrative of the tangle of events that took place in England during the late 1640s and led to the purge of the Long Parliament and the execution of King Charles I. Emily Underdown (1863–1947) was an English writer, novelist and poet. She is best known for popularising Dante (1265–1321) and for her children's books. Many of her works are written under the pseudonym Norley Chester, which name appears to have been taken from the village of Norley, Cheshire, near the town of Chester. The use of pseudonyms was common with female writers of the time. She also illustrated the book ''The Pageant of The Year: A Garden Record In Verse''. According to ''Chaucer as Children's Literature: Retellings from the Victorian and Edwardian Eras'', Underdown's ''The Gateway to Chaucer'' "...is probably the most thoughtful presentation to children..." of the complicated work, and "...one of the most thoughtful collections with great philosophical and historical interest." George Underdown
George Underdown (12 May 1859 29 May 1895) was an English first-class cricketer. Underdown was born at Petersfield in May 1859. He played his club cricket in the town for Petersfield Cricket Club, serving as its assistant-secretary by 1880. As an amateur, he made his debut in first-class cricket for a United Eleven, captained by W. G. Grace, against the touring Australians at Chichester in 1882. Underdown began playing first-class cricket for Hampshire in 1883, representing the county in nine first-class matches prior to them losing first-class status at the end of the 1885 season. Across ten first-class matches, Underdown scored 231 runs at an average of 12.83, with one half century score of 63. James "Jim" Underdown (born October 9, 1960) has been the executive director of The Center for Inquiry (CFI) West in Los Angeles since 1999. The Center for Inquiry is a non-profit educational organization with headquarters in Amherst, New York, whose primary mission is to foster a secular society based on science, reason, freedom of inquiry, and humanist values. CFI West is the largest facility in the organization outside Amherst. Underdown founded the Center for Inquiry Investigations Group (formerly the Independent Investigations Group), a volunteer-based organization, in January 2000 at the Center for Inquiry West in Los Angeles, California.
