''Unconquered'' is a 1947 American historical epic adventure film produced and directed by Cecil B. DeMille and starring Gary Cooper and Paulette Goddard. The supporting cast features Boris Karloff, Cecil Kellaway, Ward Bond, Howard Da Silva, Katherine DeMille (the director's daughter), C. Aubrey Smith and Mike Mazurki. Released by Paramount Pictures, the film depicts the violent struggles between American colonists and Native Americans on the western frontier in the mid-18th century during the 1763 Pontiac's Rebellion, primarily around Fort Pitt (modern-day Pittsburgh). The Unconquered ( cs, Neporažení) is a 1956 Czechoslovak war film. It is loosely inspired by the Battle of Czajánek's barracks. It is about soldiers of the Czechoslovak army who refuse to surrender during the German occupation of Czechoslovakia and fight back. Plot The film is set in March 1939. Czechoslovakia is occupied by Germany. All units are ordered to surrender. The films is about soldiers located in a barracks close to Polish border. Officers are divided whether to obey or not. Captain Richter is uncertain. First lieutenant Žáček would obey. Corporal Říha wants to fight. Říha eventually takes over the unit and prepares them to fight. Žáček tries to stop him and tries to persuade Richter to make order. Žáček threatens Říha with weapon but is killed by soldiers. When Germans get close to the barracks, battle begins. ''The Unconquered'' is a three-act play written by Russian-American author Ayn Rand as an adaptation of her 1936 novel ''We the Living''. The story follows Kira Argounova, a young woman living in the Soviet Union in the 1920s. Her lover Leo Kovalensky develops tuberculosis. To get money for his treatment, Kira has an affair with a Communist official, Andrei Taganov. After recovering from his illness, Leo becomes involved with black market food sales that Andrei is investigating. When Andrei realizes that Kira loves Leo, he helps his rival avoid prosecution, then commits suicide. Leo leaves Kira, who decides to risk her life escaping the country. Rand sold an option for the adaptation to producer Jerome Mayer and wrote a script, but he was unable to stage the play. Upon learning about the script, Russian actress Eugenie Leontovich recommended it to producer George Abbott. He staged the play on Broadway in February 1940.
