Shehu Umar Ibn Muhammad also known as Shehu Sanda Kyarimi, CBE, CMG, KBE, was Shehu of Dikwa between 1922 and 1937 and Shehu of Borno from 1937 to 1967. Sanda Kura Of Borno
Shehu Umar Sanda ibn Ibrahim Kura al-Kanemi was the Shehu of Borno from 1922 to 1937. Life In the year 1893, the al-Kanemi dynasty were evicted from Bornu and left out of rulership by the Sudanese explorer Rabih az-Zubayr. The dynasty ruled over Bornu for almost a century from 1810. After the death of Shehu Kiari by Rabih in 1894, members of the dynasty fled all over the region. Some fled to the Kano emirate, others to Damagaram and a few went into hiding inside metropolitan Borno itself. Umar Sanda Kura lead the group in Damagaram which was the largest and most important. The Borno Emirate or Borno Sultanate is a traditional Nigerian state formed at the start of the 20th century. It is headed by descendants of the rulers of the Bornu Empire, founded before 1000. The rulers have the title Shehu of Borno (var. Shehu of Bornu, Sultan of Borno/u). Gawain Bell
Sir Gawain Westray Bell (21 January 1909 – 26 July 1995) was a British colonial administrator who became the Governor of Northern Nigeria. Early life Bell was born in Cape Town, South Africa to an executive of the New Zealand Shipping Company. At 10, his family moved back to Cumberland, England where he attended the Dragon School, Oxford, Winchester College and Hertford College, Oxford. Sudan, Palestine, and World War II In 1931, Bell entered the Sudan Political Service, where he learned Arabic. His postings included Eastern Sudan, the Nuba Mountains, and Kurdofan. In 1938, Bell was seconded to the Government of Palestine where he worked with the police in Gaza. He eventually became commander of the Beersheba Camel Gendarmerie. Bernard Henry Bourdillon
Sir Bernard Henry Bourdillon (1883–1948) was a British colonial administrator who was Governor of Uganda (1932–1935) and of Nigeria (1935–1943). Early years Bourdillon was born on 3 December 1883 at Burnie, Tasmania to English parents. Despite being born in Tasmania, he said he considered himself "English, not Australian." He grew up in England and South Africa, and was educated at Tonbridge School in Tonbridge, Kent. He attended St John's College, Oxford, graduating in 1906. Dikwa
Dikwa is a town located in Borno State, Nigeria. History of Dikwa Dikwa used to be part of the kingdom of Borno before being captured by Rabih in 1893. The latter had the place fortified and Dikwa became the capital of his kingdom from 1893 to 1900. In 1900, the French defeated Rabih and captured Dikwa. The town was handed over to the Germans in 1902 because of a treaty signed in 1893 between the Germans and the British which stipulated that the town of Dikwa should become German. This treaty is at the origin of the Dikwa Emirate. Between 1902 and 1916, Dikwa was the capital of what the Europeans called German Borno. After the First World War until 1961, the town and the Dikwa Emirate were administered by the British under a League of Nations Mandate and a United Nations Trusteeship agreement.
