Ukrainian Volunteer Battalions
Ukrainian volunteer battalions (, more formally , or abbreviated ) were militias and paramilitary groups mobilized as a response to the perceived state of weakness and unwillingness of the regular Armed Forces to counter rising separatism in spring 2014. They trace their origins to the "Maidan Self-Defense" militias formed during the Euromaidan in 2013. The earliest of these volunteer units were later formalized into military, special police and paramilitary formations in a response to Russian military intervention in Ukraine. Most of the formations were formed or placed under command of government agencies of Ministry of Internal Affairs — as " Special Tasks Patrol Police" — and Ministry of Defence — as " Territorial defence battalions". Territorial Defense Forces (Ukraine)
The Territorial Defence Forces ( uk, Війська територіальної оборони, translit=Viiska terytorialnoi oborony) are the military reserve component of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The Territorial Defence Forces were formed after the reorganization of the Territorial Defence Battalions, volunteer militias created during the War in Donbas under the command of the Ministry of Defence. Territorial Defence units existed from 2015 until 2021 in semi-organized forms until 2022 when they were formally organized into a unified defense corps under the Territorial Defence Forces. It is formed by a core of part-time reservists, usually former combat veterans, and in cases of war can be expanded to local civilian volunteers for local defense, in a case of mass mobilization. Svyatyi Mykolai Battalion
Svyatyi Mykolai Battalion (translated: Saint Nicholas Battalion), also known as Mykolaiv Battalion, is a special police battalion from Mykolaiv Oblast. The formation was established on 5 May 2014 in Mykolaiv during the 2014 pro-Russian unrest in Ukraine, which led to separatist movements in southern and eastern regions of Ukraine. Poltava Battalion
The Poltava Battalion ( uk, батальйон патрульної служби міліції особливого призначення "Полтава") is a Ukrainian battalion that is part of the Special Tasks Patrol Police, subordinate to the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The unit is composed of approximately 300 policemen ages ranging between 18–45. Various charity organizations in Ukraine have donated basic supplies and provide medical care for the volunteers of the battalion. A company is a military unit, typically consisting of 80–250 soldiers and usually commanded by a major or a captain. Special Tasks Patrol Police (Ukraine)
The Special Police Forces ( uk, Спеціальні поліцейські сили) is a Ukrainian volunteer corps of law enforcement units, part of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine. It was originally created for prevention of criminal encroachment and defence of civil order on 15 April 2014, following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
