USS Valentine (AF-47)
USS ''Valentine'' (AF-47) was an ''Adria''-class stores ship in service with the United States Navy from 1945 to 1946 and from 1951 to 1959. In 1967, She was sold into commercial service and she was scrapped in 1987. History ''Valentine'' was laid down under a Maritime Commission contract (MC hull 2339) at Beaumont, Texas, by the Pennsylvania Shipyards, Inc. Launched on 3 February 1945 and sponsored by Mrs. P. Blaschke, the ship was placed "in service" on 19 June 1945 for ferrying and departed Beaumont on 25 June, bound for Galveston, Texas. There, at the Todd-Galveston Shipyard, Inc., ''Valentine'' underwent conversion to a refrigeration ship. She was commissioned at Galveston, Texas, on 19 July 1945. Diesel Engine
The diesel engine, named after Rudolf Diesel, is an internal combustion engine in which ignition of the fuel is caused by the elevated temperature of the air in the cylinder due to mechanical compression; thus, the diesel engine is a so-called compression-ignition engine (CI engine). This contrasts with engines using spark plug-ignition of the air-fuel mixture, such as a petrol engine (gasoline engine) or a gas engine (using a gaseous fuel like natural gas or liquefied petroleum gas). Pearl Harbor is an American lagoon harbor on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, west of Honolulu. A Crown colony or royal colony was a colony administered by The Crown within the British Empire. There was usually a Governor, appointed by the British monarch on the advice of the UK Government, with or without the assistance of a local Council. In some cases, this Council was split into two: an Executive Council and a Legislative Council, and was similar to the Privy Council that advises the Monarch.
