UCI Track Cycling World Championships – Men's Sprint
The UCI Track Cycling World Championships – Men's sprint is the world championship sprint event held annually at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships. Between its inception and 1992, the sprint was separated into two events; one for professionals and one for amateurs. From 1993, all competitors competed in one open event. It was first held at the 1895 championships, two years after the first amateur sprint world championship. , Koichi Nakano from Japan has won the most titles with ten consecutive professional wins between 1977 and 1986. Sprint (cycling)
The sprint or match sprint is a track cycling event involving between two and four riders, though it is usually run as a one-on-one match race between opponents who, unlike in the individual pursuit, start next to each other. Men's sprint has been an Olympic event at every games except 1904 (which had races at seven different distances) and 1912 (which had no track cycling events). Women's sprints have been contested at every Olympics since 1988. Racing style Depending on the size of the velodrome, this event can be from 250 m to 1000 m. Unlike the Sprint (running), sprints in athletics (sport), athletics, these events do not usually start with riders sprinting from the starting line and they are not confined to lanes. The early parts of each race will often be highly tactical with riders pedalling slowly, as they carefully jockey for position, often trying to force their opponents up high on the track in an attempt to get their rivals to make the first move. Pietro Bixio
Pietro Bixio (11 August 1875 – 26 July 1905) was an Italian track cyclist. Pietro Bixio won the Italian professional sprint championship three times, in 1895, 1903 and 1904. In 1900 he raced during the Olympic Games in Paris at the ''Grand Prix de l’Exposition'', a race for professionals for 15.000 French Francs , the biggest prize purse in the world at the time. Bixio was eliminated in the semi-final. In the ''Grande Course de Nations'' team competition over 1500 meters (a kind of points race) he was third (teaming up with Gian Ferdinando Tomaselli and Giuseppe Singrossi). At the 1902 UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Rome, Bixio won the bronze medal in the sprint tournament, becoming the first Italian to win a medal at the World Championships. In 1903 he was also third in the prestigious ''Grand Prix de Paris''. Thorvald Ellegaard
Thorvald Ellegaard (7 March 1877 - 27 April 1954) was a leading Danish track cycling, track racing cycle sport, cyclist in the 1900s and 1910s. He won the world professional sprint (cycling), sprint title six times, three European titles, and 24 Danish titles. He also won the Grand Prix de Paris (cycling), Grand Prix de Paris in 1901 and 1911. Over the course of his long career, which spanned 31 years, he competed in 1,560 significant races, winning 925 of them. He was Denmark's first sports idol. 1900 UCI Track Cycling World Championships
The 1900 UCI Track Cycling World Championships were the World Championship for track cycling. They took place in Paris, France from 12 to 18 August 1900. Four events for men were contested, two for professionals and two for amateurs. Apart from the four events a tandem event was organized. This race has never been officially recognized. The Dutch duo Harrie Meyers- Fernando Tomaselli won ahead of the French duo Edmond Jacquelin- Lucien Louvet and the French-American duo Charles Vanoni- Robert Protin. Because the race was not official the medalists are not listed in the list of Tandem World Champions.
