U.S. Provisional Government Of New Mexico
Under the provisions of the Kearny Code as promulgated in 1846, the first legislature of New Mexico commenced its session on December 6, 1847. The Council consisted of seven members, with Antonio Sandoval, of Bernalillo County, as president, and the House of twenty-one members, with W. Z. Angney as speaker. It passed an act providing for a convention to consider a permanent form of government for New Mexico, and the delegates for this purpose met on October 10, 1848. It adopted a memorial to Congress asking for a regular territorial government, and declared against the introduction of domestic slavery. In the next year the military governor called an election for delegates to a convention to frame a territorial form of government. Meanwhile, Texas, which claimed all the territory east of the Rio Grande, sent Spruce M. Baird, as judge to organize that district into a county to be called Santa Fe. Spruce M
A spruce is a tree of the genus ''Picea'' (), a genus of about 35 species of coniferous evergreen trees in the family Pinaceae, found in the northern temperate and boreal (taiga) regions of the Earth. ''Picea'' is the sole genus in the subfamily Piceoideae. Spruces are large trees, from about 20 to 60 m (about 60–200 ft) tall when mature, and have whorled branches and conical form. They can be distinguished from other members of the pine family by their needles (leaves), which are four-sided and attached singly to small persistent peg-like structures (pulvini or sterigmata) on the branches, and by their cones (without any protruding bracts), which hang downwards after they are pollinated. Manuel Álvarez (trader)
Manuel Álvarez (c.1794 – 5 July 1856) was a Spanish-born Santa Fe trader who became lieutenant-governor of New Mexico. Trader Manuel Álvarez was born in Spain around 1794. In 1818 he left Spain, reaching Mexico in 1819. In 1823 he left Mexico and travelled via Cuba to Missouri, then continued from St. Louis west to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he opened a store. The Mexican republic had gained independence from Spain during the Mexican War of Independence (1810–1821). In 1829 the Mexican government expelled all Spanish nationals, so Álvarez had to leave New Mexico. For a few years Álvarez was a free trapper in the Rocky Mountain fur trade, then a brigade leader for the American Fur Company, returning to Santa Fe around 1834. On 21 March 1839 he was appointed United States consul at Santa Fe.
