U.S. Route 82 In Mississippi
U.S. Route 82 (US 82) is a section of a west-east highway that travels through Mississippi. It starts at the Arkansas state line at Refuge and ends at the Alabama state line east of Columbus. Route description As are most other US numbered highways in the state, this entire section of US 82 is defined in Mississippi Code Annotated § 65-3-3. Through the entire state, the highway is four-laned with interchanges at major junctions. After crossing the Mississippi River from Arkansas via the four-laned, cable-stayed Greenville Bridge, the road briefly travels northeast toward central Greenville, then turns east toward Leland, where it intersects US 61, as US 278 breaks it concurrency and goes on to follow US 61 north. Arkansas
Arkansas ( ) is a landlocked state in the South Central United States. It is bordered by Missouri to the north, Tennessee and Mississippi to the east, Louisiana to the south, and Texas and Oklahoma to the west. Refuge, Mississippi
Refuge is an unincorporated community located in Washington County, Mississippi, United States. Refuge Landing was located west of the settlement, directly on the Mississippi River. History Francis Griffin purchased land in 1831 on a high ridge bordering the Mississippi River where he established "Refuge Plantation". By 1850, Griffin had 150 slaves working on his plantation. The Refuge Plantation House, shaded by oak trees and protected from the river by a levee system, was erected with a view of the river, and remains today one of the best examples of a mid-nineteenth-century plantation house in Washington County. Refuge had a post office. The population in 1900 was 30. Old Refuge Cemetery, now extinct, was located north of the settlement. Recent development Harlow's Casino Resort opened in 2007 in Refuge. The proposed Interstate 69 (I-69) extension from Indianapolis southwest to Texas currently has a short piece completed in the US state of Mississippi, south of Memphis, Tennessee. The south end is an at-grade intersection with the former route of Mississippi Highway 304 (MS 304) near Tunica Resorts, where MS 713 continues west to U.S. Highway 61 (US 61), and the route continues north to the Mississippi state line. Much of the route overlaps MS 304, which intersects US 61 farther north than MS 713.
