U.S. Open (table Tennis)
The annual U.S. Open is the oldest currently running table tennis tournament in the United States. It attracts over 600 athletes annually. The first events were actually run by either the New York Table Tennis Club or the American Ping Pong Association. The first USA Table Tennis (USTTA) tournament was held in 1934. The U.S. Open has been previously held in various locations, including Anaheim, California; Charlotte, North Carolina; ; Las Vegas, Nevada; Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Grand Rapids, Michigan; and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Table Tennis
Table tennis, also known as ping-pong and whiff-whaff, is a sport in which two or four players hit a lightweight ball, also known as the ping-pong ball, back and forth across a table using small solid rackets. It takes place on a hard table divided by a net. Except for the initial serve, the rules are generally as follows: Players must allow a ball played toward them to bounce once on their side of the table and must return it so that it bounces on the opposite side. A point is scored when a player fails to return the ball within the rules. Play is fast and demands quick reactions. Spinning the ball alters its trajectory and limits an opponent's options, giving the hitter a great advantage. Table tennis is governed by the worldwide organization International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF), founded in 1926. ITTF currently includes 226 member associations. Victor Barna
Viktor Győző Barna (Braun) (24 August 1911 – 27 February 1972) was a Hungarian and British champion table tennis player as well as a record five times singles World Champion. He won 41 World Championship medals and also won 20 English Open titles. Personal life Barna's birth name was Győző Braun, but, because of anti-Semitism in Hungary at the time, he changed his name to a Hungarian-sounding name. In September 1939, during the outbreak of the Second World War, he and his wife were in America. Barna returned to Europe, in order to fight against the Nazis. He joined the British army as a parachutist, and fought in Yugoslavia. After the British withdrew from Yugoslavia, Barna remained in England. After the war he settled with his wife in London. He became a British national in 1952. Later he became a representative for the Dunlop Sports Company and continued traveling the world in this capacity. Ruth Hughes Aarons (June 11, 1918 – June 6, 1980) was a US table tennis player, vaudeville entertainer, and talent manager. Early life Ruth Aarons was born in Stamford, Connecticut, to Leila (née Hughes), an opera singer, and Alfred E. Aarons, a Broadway theatrical producer. She came from a wealthy Jewish family, and lived in New York City, where she attended and graduated from St. Agatha Episcopal High School in 1936. Table tennis career Originally a tennis player, Aarons was reportedly introduced to table tennis by mere chance, in the summer of 1933. During a rainstorm, which ended a tennis match early, she discovered and quickly became fascinated by table tennis. Sol Schiff
Solomon Joseph Schiff (June 28, 1917 – February 26, 2012) was a Jewish-American table tennis player from New York. He attended Textile High School in New York City. Table tennis career Schiff was a six-time U.S. Open Men's Doubles champion, and nine-time U.S. Mixed Doubles champion. In 1936, he won the U.S. Men's Singles title. From 1937 to 1947, he won four medals in doubles and team events in the World Table Tennis Championships. The four World Championship medals included two gold medals; one in the doubles with Jimmy McClure at the 1938 World Table Tennis Championships and one in the team event at the 1937 World Table Tennis Championships. He also won an English Open title. He was inducted into the USA Table Tennis Hall of Fame. He was also inducted into the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.
