U.S. Route 89A
U.S. Route 89A is a north–south auxiliary U.S. highway (though its actual direction of travel is more east–west) in southwestern Kane County, Utah and northeastern Coconino County, Arizona in the southwestern United States. The highway is an old routing of U.S. Route 89 from Bitter Springs, Arizona to Kanab, Utah. The state of Arizona has designated this highway the Fredonia-Vermilion Cliffs Scenic Road. The highway is used to access the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park and is known for the Navajo Bridge. Until 2008, the Utah portion was signed State Route 11. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT, pronounced "A-Dot") is an Arizona state government agency charged with facilitating mobility within the state. In addition to managing the state's state highways, highway system, the agency is also involved with public transportation and airport, municipal airports. The department was created in 1974 when the state merged the Arizona Highway Department with the Arizona Department of Aeronautics. Vermilion Cliffs
The Vermilion Cliffs are the second "step" up in the five-step Grand Staircase of the Colorado Plateau, in northern Arizona and southern Utah. 1977 Utah State Route Renumbering
In 1977, the Utah State Legislature changed its system of how state route numbers were used and assigned. Prior to 1977 Utah used a system where every U.S. Highway and Interstate Highway traversing the state was assigned a different Utah state route number. This state route number was not posted on signs, but was only used for legislative purposes, such as funding. There were many instances where having different route numbers for signing and legislative purposes could cause confusion. For example, the highway signed Interstate 15 in Utah was legislatively defined State Route 1, not route 15. State Route 15 also existed, but was a different route that passed through Zion National Park. State Highways Deleted By The Utah State Legislature In 1969
A number of minor routes in the U.S. state of Utah were deleted by the State Legislature in 1969. State Route 19 The State Road Commission designated a state highway connecting Cedar City with Lund on August 2, 1912. The purpose was to connect Cedar City with the nearest railroad station, that of the Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad (Union Pacific Railroad) at Lund. A connecting road—now known as Gap Road—running west from the county seat at Parowan through Hieroglyphic Canyon (now Parowan Gap) to the Cedar City–Lund road was added to the state highway system on December 21, 1915. In 1919, the state legislature redefined the state highway system to include only a short list of roads and any federal aid projects. Navajo Bridge is the name of twin steel spandrel arch bridges that cross the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon National Park (near Lees Ferry) in northern Coconino County, Arizona, United States. The newer of the two spans carries vehicular traffic on U.S. Route 89A (US 89A) over Marble Canyon between Bitter Springs and Jacob Lake, allowing travel into a remote Arizona Strip region north of the Colorado River including the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park.
