U.S. Route 221 (Virginia)
U.S. Route 221 (US 221) is a part of the U.S. Highway System that runs from Perry, Florida to Lynchburg, Virginia. In Virginia, the U.S. Highway runs from the North Carolina state line near Independence north to its northern terminus at US 29 Business, US 460 Business, and US 501 Business in Lynchburg. US 221 connects Independence, Galax, and Hillsville in Southwest Virginia while running concurrently with US 58. The U.S. Highway connects those communities with Roanoke via Floyd County, within which US 221 is the main east–west highway. The U.S. Highway also runs concurrently with US 460 from Roanoke to Bedford and parallels that U.S. Highway from Bedford to Lynchburg. Independence, Virginia
Independence is a town in Southwestern Virginia's Grayson County, with a population of 1,001 as of the 2020 census. As the Grayson County Seat, it is located 71 miles from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, the closest city with a population over 50,000, and is situated on Virginia's Crooked Road, a heritage trail celebrating the musical heritage of Western and Southwest Virginia. A concurrency in a road network is an instance of one physical roadway bearing two or more different route numbers. When two roadways share the same right-of-way, it is sometimes called a common section or commons. Interstate 77 (I-77) in the US state of Virginia is a north–south Interstate Highway serving Hillsville, Wytheville, and Bland. Running parallel to US Route 52 (US 52), I-77 passes through the Big Walker Mountain Tunnel and East River Mountain Tunnel, the latter on the West Virginia state line and one of only two land vehicular tunnels to cross a state line. Woodlawn, Carroll County, Virginia
Woodlawn is a census-designated place (CDP) in Carroll County, Virginia, United States. The population was 2,045 at the 2020 census. Woodlawn is musically notable as the home of Heritage Shoppe and Heritage Records, a store and record label owned by Bobby Patterson, a musician from a regionally important family of performers. Heritage Records specializes in local musicians, and also releases recordings from the Old Fiddlers' Convention in Galax, Virginia. History The area of present-day Woodlawn, located in Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains, began as a land grant to James Wood of Frederick County, Virginia in 1756. His son, James Wood, served as governor of Virginia from 1796 to 1799. New River Trail State Park
New River Trail State Park is a rail trail and state park located entirely in southwest Virginia, extending from the trail's northeastern terminus in Pulaski to its southern terminus in Galax, with a spur from Fries Junction on the main trail to Fries. Designated a National Recreation Trail, the linear park follows of the New River, which is one of the five oldest rivers in the world. Baywood, Virginia
Baywood is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Grayson County, in the southwestern part of the U.S. state of Virginia. It was first listed as a CDP in the 2020 census with a population of 414. History Baywood was established as a hub community, roughly embracing the area from Meadow Creek, Edmonds, NC, Little River and New River. The area was settled in the late 18th century by several families with land grants from the revolutionary war. The nearest town was Fries, VA until Galax, VA was established in 1905. Baywood was known as Hampton Crossroads until a post office was established there in 1903. Mail was often mixed up with mail meant for Hampton's Roads, and as a result, Hampton Crossroads became known as Baywood. Arch Moore, postmaster, named the community Baywood after a tree growing in the area called the Bay Tree. State Route 274 (SR 274) is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of Virginia. Known as Riverside Drive, the state highway runs from U.S. Route 58 and US 221 near Independence east to SR 94 near Fries. Together with SR 94, SR 274 forms part of the old alignment of US 58 and US 221 between Independence and Galax in eastern Grayson County.
