U.S. National Badminton Championships
The U.S. National Badminton Championships is a tournament organized by USA Badminton (originally the American Badminton Association) and held annually to crown the best badminton players in the United States. The tournament started in Chicago in 1937. Currently, all participants must be U.S. citizens or have resided in the United States in the preceding 12 months. There is also a separate U.S. Open Badminton Championships which is open to foreign competitors. The history of the two tournaments is rather complicated. Prior to 1954 all U.S. Badminton Championships had a "closed" format with only U.S. citizens and residents eligible to compete. From 1954 through 1969 the tournament was open to foreign competition. Between 1970 and 1976 the format fluctuated. Both a closed and an open tournament were held from 1970 through 1972; an open tournament was held in 1973; a closed tournament was held in 1974 and 1975; and both a closed and an open tournament were held again in 1976. Marten Mendez (28 August 1916 – 25 August 1994) was an American badminton player of Mexican descent who won national titles and represented his country internationally in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Known for his swift court coverage and stamina, Mendez won the U.S. men's singles title in 1949, 1950, and 1952, and reached the final in 1948 and 1951. Thelma Kingsbury (1911–1979), (later, in succession: Thelma Scovil, Thelma Welcome, Thelma Lougheed) was an English-born, naturalised American sportswoman who won major badminton titles in the British Isles and then in the US from the early 1930s to the early 1950s. Virginia Hill (born Onie Virginia Hill; August 26, 1916 – March 24, 1966) was an American organized crime figure. An Alabama native, she became a Chicago Outfit courier during the mid-1930s. Thomas Wynn Rogers (1919–1998) was an American badminton player who won numerous U.S. national titles from the late 1940s to the mid-1960s. Ethel Marshall
Ethel Marshall (May 6, 1924 - June 12, 2013) was an American badminton player noted for her mobility and shot-making prowess. Career An all-around athlete who also excelled in softball and tennis, Marshall won the US Women's Singles title on all seven occasions that she contested it (1947–1953), defeating seventeen-year-old Judy Devlin (Hashman) in the last of these. She also won the US Women's Doubles title in 1952 and 1956 with Beatrice Massman, defeating the Devlin sisters on the latter occasion who had recently won the All-England women's doubles title.
