U.S. Courthouse, Post Office And Customs House (Newport, Vermont)
The U.S. Courthouse, Post Office and Customs House, also just known as the Federal Building, is a historic federal government building at Main and 2nd Streets in downtown Newport, Vermont. Completed in 1904, it served historically as a courthouse, as a customhouse, and as a post office, and is the city's tallest building. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. Description and history The US Federal Building is prominently located in downtown Newport, at the southwest corner of Main and Second Streets. It is just east of the Orleans County Courthouse and Jail Complex, and across Main Street from Newport City Hall. It is four stories in height, built out load-bearing brick and stone. Newport is a city and the county seat of Orleans County, Vermont, United States. As of the 2020 Census, the population was 4,455. The city contains the second-largest population of any municipality in the county (only neighboring Derby is larger), and has the smallest geographic area. It is the second-smallest city by population in Vermont. Newport is also the name of a neighboring town in Orleans County. Newport was founded by European Americans as a settlement in 1793 and was first called Pickeral Point. It was the place where Rogers' Rangers retreated to in 1759, during the French and Indian War (or Seven Years War between the French and British). In the 19th century, the village was stimulated by construction of the railroad here in 1863, during the American Civil War. The lumbering firm Prouty & Miller operated here from 1865. James Knox Taylor
James Knox Taylor (October 11, 1857 – August 27, 1929) was Supervising Architect of the United States Department of the Treasury from 1897 to 1912. His name is listed '' ex officio'' as supervising architect of hundreds of federal buildings built throughout the United States during the period. Early career The son of H. Knox and Mary (Young) Taylor, he was born in Knoxville, Illinois, and attended schools in Minnesota. He attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he was a classmate of William Martin Aiken, who would precede him in the position of Supervisory Architect, and Cass Gilbert. After graduation, he worked in the New York City office of Charles C. Haight and later with Bruce Price. In 1882 he moved to St. Paul, Minnesota where he formed a partnership with Gilbert, as Gilbert & Taylor. They built many homes and churches.
