German submarine ''U-627'' was a Type VIIC U-boat built for Nazi Germany's '' Kriegsmarine'' for service during World War II. Its hull was laid down on 8 August 1941 at the yards of Blohm & Voss in Hamburg and it was commissioned on 18 June 1942 under the command of ''Kapitänleutnant'' Robert Kindelbacher. ''U-627'' was sunk on 27 October 1942 just south of Iceland in position by depth charges from a British B-17 Flying Fortress bomber from 206 Squadron RAF. This resulted in the loss of all 44 crew members. Design German Type VIIC submarines were preceded by the shorter Type VIIB submarines. 6th U-boat Flotilla
The 6th U-boat Flotilla (German ''6. Unterseebootsflottille''), also known as Hundius Flotilla, was a front-line unit of Nazi Germany's ''Kriegsmarine'' before and during World War II. Formed on 1 October 1938 in Kiel under the command of ''Korvettenkapitän'' Werner Hartmann, it was named in honour of ''Kapitänleutnant'' Paul Hundius, a U-boat commander during World War I, that died on 16 September 1918 after his U-boat was sunk by depth charges from British steamer ''Young Crow''. The flotilla was disbanded in December 1939. The flotilla was re-formed as "6th U-boat Flotilla" in July 1941 under the command of ''Korvettenkapitän'' Georg-Wilhelm Schulz with her base in Danzig. B-17 Flying Fortress
The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress is a four-engined heavy bomber developed in the 1930s for the United States Army Air Corps (USAAC). Relatively fast and high-flying for a bomber of its era, the B-17 was used primarily in the European Theater of Operations and dropped more bombs than any other aircraft during World War II. It is the third-most produced bomber of all time, behind the four-engined Consolidated B-24 Liberator and the multirole, twin-engined Junkers Ju 88. A motor–generator (an M–G set) is a device for converting electrical power to another form. Motor–generator sets are used to convert frequency, voltage, or phase of power. They may also be used to isolate electrical loads from the electrical power supply line. Large motor–generators were widely used to convert industrial amounts of power while smaller motor–generators (such as the one shown in the picture) were used to convert battery power to higher DC voltages. Supercharged
In an internal combustion engine, a supercharger compresses the intake gas, forcing more air into the engine in order to produce more power for a given displacement. The current categorisation is that a supercharger is a form of forced induction that is mechanically powered (usually by a belt from the engine's crankshaft), as opposed to a turbocharger, which is powered by the kinetic energy of the exhaust gasses. The draft or draught of a ship's hull is the vertical distance between the waterline and the bottom of the hull (keel). The draught of the vessel is the maximum depth of any part of the vessel, including appendages such as rudders, propellers and drop keels if deployed. Draft determines the minimum depth of water a ship or boat can safely navigate. The related term air draft is the maximum height of any part of the vessel above the water. The more heavily a vessel is loaded, the deeper it sinks into the water, and the greater its draft. No. 206 Squadron is a Test and Evaluation Squadron of the Royal Air Force. Until 2005 it was employed in the maritime patrol role with the Nimrod MR.2 at RAF Kinloss, Moray. Keel Laying
Laying the keel or laying down is the formal recognition of the start of a ship's construction. It is often marked with a ceremony attended by dignitaries from the shipbuilding company and the ultimate owners of the ship. Keel laying is one of the four specially celebrated events in the life of a ship; the others are launching, commissioning and decommissioning. In earlier times, the event recognized as the keel laying was the initial placement of the central timber making up the backbone of a vessel, called the keel.
