Type 930 Submarine Rescue Ship
The Type 930 submarine rescue ship with NATO reporting name Hudong (沪东) class is a type of submarine rescue ship developed by China for the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN). Only a single ship was built and remains in active service with the PLAN. The Type 930 is one of the two direct results of a submarine accident that occurred in 1959 during a naval exercise in which a PLAN submarine collided with a frigate when surfacing, causing the submarine to sink. Because there was no available rescue ship, the sunken sub attempted to swim to the surface, and during that attempt all crew except one died. The one survivor was permanently disabled as a result. In direct response to this accident, PLAN issued a requirement of submarine rescue ships in 1960. NATO Reporting Name
NATO reporting names are code names for military equipment from Russia, China, and historically, the Eastern Bloc (Soviet Union and other nations of the Warsaw Pact). They provide unambiguous and easily understood English words in a uniform manner in place of the original designations, which either may have been unknown to the Western world at the time or easily confused codes. The People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN; ), also known as the People's Navy, Chinese Navy, or PLA Navy, is the maritime service branch of the People's Liberation Army. The PLAN traces its lineage to naval units fighting during the Chinese Civil War and was established on 23 April 1949. Throughout the 1950s and early 1960s, the Soviet Union provided assistance to the PLAN in the form of naval advisers and export of equipment and technology. Until the late 1980s, the PLAN was largely a riverine and littoral force (brown-water navy). Type 922 Rescue And Salvage Ship
Type 922 rescue and salvage ship is a series of rescue and salvage ships developed by China for the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN), and after decades of service they still remain active in other Chinese governmental establishments. Type 922 Type 922 is the first model of Type 922 series, and it was converted from a 3400-ton cargo ship transferred from Ministry of Transportation. Order to develop rescue and salvage ship was issued on October 27, 1960 and on July 16, 1962, the design was approved. Construction begun in early 1964 after nearly a year of preparation and in July 1965, the ship was launched. East Sea Fleet
The Eastern Theater Command Navy (), or East Sea Fleet (ESF; ), is one of the three fleets of the People's Liberation Army Navy, operating in the East China Sea under the Eastern Theater Command. It was the first naval force formed by the People's Liberation Army, on 23 April 1949 and was initially based at Shanghai. Renamed in 1955, it has since been assigned to be part of the People's Liberation Army Navy and its headquarters have been moved to Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, but the fleet continues to patrol the East China Sea.
