Type 906 Torpedo Trials Craft
Type 906 torpedo trial craft is a Chinese torpedo craft currently in service with the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN), and has received NATO reporting name Xiang Yang Hong 9 or 向阳红 9, meaning facing the red sun. After more than three decades of service, the ship still remains active as of mid 2010s. In addition to support torpedo weaponry development, the ship is equipped to perform various research tasks, and thus also classified as general purpose research ship (AGE/AG). Torpedo Craft
A torpedo boat is a relatively small and fast naval ship designed to carry torpedoes into battle. The first designs were steam-powered craft dedicated to ramming enemy ships with explosive spar torpedoes. Later evolutions launched variants of self-propelled Whitehead torpedoes. These were inshore craft created to counter both the threat of battleships and other slow and heavily armed ships by using speed, agility, and powerful torpedoes, and the overwhelming expense of building a like number of capital ships to counter an enemy's. People's Liberation Army Navy
The People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN; ), also known as the People's Navy, Chinese Navy, or PLA Navy, is the maritime service branch of the People's Liberation Army. The PLAN traces its lineage to naval units fighting during the Chinese Civil War and was established on 23 April 1949. NATO Reporting Name
NATO reporting names are code names for military equipment from Russia, China, and historically, the Eastern Bloc (Soviet Union and other nations of the Warsaw Pact). They provide unambiguous and easily understood English words in a uniform manner in place of the original designations, which either may have been unknown to the Western world at the time or easily confused codes. Type 625 oceanographic research ship is a series of oceanographic research ship developed by China for its People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN). The series consisted of three models, A, B & C, but A & B are usually grouped together as one because C model differs from Models A & B on much greater scale. It is usually the last phase of construction and takes place on open water, and it can last from a few hours to many days.
