Twitch (film)
''Twitch'' is a Student Academy Award-nominated short film directed by Leah Meyerhoff and starring Emma Galvin, Peter Corrie, Toni Meyerhoff. ''Twitch'' kicked off the film festival circuit by winning a Grand Jury Prize at Slamdance and going on to screen in over 200 film festivals worldwide. ''Twitch'' has since won over a dozen international awards and is currently airing on the Independent Film Channel and Skandinavia TV. Plot ''Twitch'' tells the story of a young girl torn between two worlds: her domestic life, where she must care for her mother who uses a wheelchair, and her escape into the emerging world of sexuality with her eager, hormone-addled boyfriend. Leah's mother plays the Mother role in an essentially autobiographical role for the filmmaker. Leah Meyerhoff
Leah Meyerhoff (born December 4, 1979) is an American Student Academy Award-nominated director, producer and screenwriter. She has received attention as the writer and director of the feature film ''I Believe in Unicorns'' starring Natalia Dyer and Peter Vack. Her films have screened in over 200 film festivals worldwide and won over a dozen international awards. Biography Leah Meyerhoff was born in San Francisco, California and attended Berkeley High School. She graduated with Honors from Brown University with a bachelor's degree in Art-Semiotics and a master's degree in Film at New York University (NYU). Her debut feature film ''I Believe in Unicorns'' premiered at SXSW in 2014 and won the grand jury prize at the Atlanta Film Festival. While at NYU, Meyerhoff directed ''Twitch'', a short film portraying a young girl's irrational fear that her mother's disability is contagious. Reel Women Media is a filmmaking non-profit organization in Austin, Texas, USA, that provides support to women in the film industry. Background and history Ally Acker used the term "Reel Women" in 1984 for her book ''Reel Women: Pioneers of the Cinema, 1896 to Present'' and documentary series. This was the first production in the market that revealed the transformative roles women had within the film industry that were not as widely recognized by prior film history studies. The term had previously been used by a group of women filmmakers in Melbourne, Australia, in the 1970s.
