Twekkelo
Twekkelo is a hamlet in Twente, in the province of Overijssel. It is located between Enschede and Hengelo. It had 240 registered inhabitants in 2008. Until 1934 it fell, for administrative purposes, within the ambit of Lonneker, but in that year Lonneker was abolished for administrative purposes, and both are now administered as districts of Enschede. History Twekkelo was traditionally included in the parish of Enschede, along with Lonneker, Driene, Usselo and De Eschmarke. From approximately the year 900 a record survives naming the place as Tuegloe. Twekkelo itself was divided into districts identified as the Gerinkhoek, the Beldershoek, the Wullenhoek, the Rougoor, the Mensinkhoek, the Twekkeler field and the Great field. Twente
Twente ( nl, Twente , Tweants dialect: ''Tweante'') is a region in the eastern Netherlands. It encompasses the most urbanised and easternmost part of the province of Overijssel. Twente is most likely named after the Tuihanti or Tvihanti, a Germanic tribe that settled in the area and was mentioned by the Roman historian Tacitus. Enschede
Enschede (; known as in the local Twents dialect) is a municipality and city in the eastern Netherlands in the province of Overijssel and in the Twente region. The eastern parts of the urban area reaches the border of the German city of Gronau. The municipality of Enschede consisted of the city of Enschede until 1935, when the rural municipality of Lonneker, which surrounded the city, was annexed after the rapid industrial expansion of Enschede which began in the 1860s and involved the building of railways and the digging of the Twentekanaal. The proposal for consolidation began in 1872, per the Tubantia newspaper article on 22 June 1872 that referenced a committee of 5 to oversee a study. They were: J. Twentekanaal
The Twentekanaal () is a canal running through the Dutch provinces of Gelderland and Overijssel, connecting the three largest cities of the Twente region, Almelo, Hengelo and Enschede to the national network of rivers and canals. Because the canal forks to reach Almelo, the canal is officially plural, which is Twentekanalen. The Twentekanaal starts at the IJssel North of Zutphen at the village of Eefde and runs through Almen, Lochem, Goor, Delden and Hengelo to Enschede. West of Delden, a fork of the canal runs to Almelo. Both canals (Zutphen - Enschede and the fork Delden - Almelo) are managed by Rijkswaterstaat (the Dutch government body responsible for waterways). Lonneker () is a village in Twente, in the province of Overijssel. It is located in the municipality of Enschede, about 3 km north of the city centre. History The village was first mentioned in the late-10th century as "in Loningheri", and means "settlement on a sandy ridge of the people of Lono (person)".
