Tvedes Bryggeri
Tvedes Bryggeri ( da, Tvede's Brewery) was a brewery on Vesterbrogade in Copenhagen, Denmark. Founded by Hans Jørgen Tvede in 1852, it became the largest Nordic producer of small beer in the 1880s prior to its merger with several other breweries under the name ''De Forenede Bryggerier'' (United Breweries) in 1891. Its buildings were converted into apartments in the 1990s. The two buildings that front the street (No. 140 and 152) are heritage listed. History Hans Jørgen Tvede was a builder of profession but his grandfather had owned a distillery on Gråbrødretorv and his father managed a brewery in Grønnegade. Tvede had also experience with brewing of beer from Ørholm Mølle, which he had rented for some ten years before acquiring a lot on Vesterbrogade in Copenhagen in 1851 to set up a new brewery. Carl Frederik Tietgen
Carl Frederik Tietgen (19 March 1829 – 19 October 1901) was a Danish financier and industrialist. He played an important role in the industrialisation of Denmark as the founder of numerous prominent Danish companies, many of which are still in operation today. Tietgen notably formed conglomerates, thus several of Tietgen's companies attained monopoly-like status, cementing their durability. Tietgen was a dedicated Grundtvigian, and financed the completion of the Marble Church at his own expense. Early life and career Tietgen was born on 19 March 1829 in Odense, the son of a social club manager catering to the local bourgeoisie. He helped his family out at the club throughout his childhood. After finishing his commercial apprenticeship, he worked in the United Kingdom for five years, and settled in Manchester, England. Jens Levin Tvede
Jens Levin Tvede (7 April 1830 - 11 March 1891) was a Danish distiller, industrialist and politician. He was the brother of Hans Jørgen Tvede and the father of Charles Tvede. Early life and education Tvede was born on 7 April 1830 in Copenhagen, the son of Jørgen Martin Hansen Tvede (1790-1849) and Cathrine Elene Dorthea Drewes (1791-1854). Tvede's father moved his distillery from Copenhagen to Helsingør in 1842. Tvede enrolled at the College of Advanced Technology. Career Tvede discontinued his studies to run the distillery when his father died in 1849. He initially ran it on behalf of his mother but became its owner in 1854. The distillery was located in the courtyard at til Sudergade 23, p. It was destroyed in a fire in 1864. He then purchased a new site at Stjernegade 25 and constructed a modern, steam-powered distillery. It grew to considerable size. Vesterbrogade
Vesterbrogade () is the main shopping street of the Vesterbro district of Copenhagen, Denmark. The 1.5 km long street runs from the City Hall Square in the east to Pile Allé in Frederiksberg in the west where it turns into Roskildevej. On its way, it passes Copenhagen Central Station as well as the small triangular square Vesterbros Torv. It is one of four such ''-bro streets'', the other being Nørrebrogade, Østerbrogade and Amagerbrogade. History Early history Vesterbroghade originates in the 12th-century country road that led in and out of Copenhagen's Western City Gate. The road passed Sankt Jørgens Bæk (St. George's Stream) on its way to Valby and often changed course. Gråbrødretorv
Gråbrødretorv is a public square in the centre of Copenhagen, Denmark, just off the pedestrian street Strøget. History Gråbrødretorv (Greyfriars Square) takes its name from a Franciscan friary, which was established at the site in 1238. The friary consisted at its height of a church, a refectory, a great hall which was used on many occasions for important state meetings and meetings of the provincial which governed Franciscan monasteries in Denmark. The friary was dissolved in 1530 but the church tower was a visible part of the city skyline as late as 1596. The huge cellars of the friary became the town jail and eventually the church itself was converted to a prison. In 1621 Christian IV added an orphanage and recommissioned the church as a house of worship, though it was called the "Prison Church".
