Tuula Hovi
Tuula Hovi (born 14 November 1939) is a Finnish orienteering competitor who competed in the 1960s. She participated at the first European Orienteering Championships in Løten in 1962, where she placed fourth in the individual course. At the 1964 Championships in Le Brassus, she placed sixth in the individual course, and also participated in the Finnish relay team which placed fifth. At the 1968 World Orienteering Championships in Linköping she placed 11th in the individual course, and won a bronze medal in the ''relay event'' for the Finnish team, together with Pirjo Seppä and Raila Kerkelä. Orienteering
Orienteering is a group of sports that require navigational skills using a map and compass to navigate from point to point in diverse and usually unfamiliar terrain whilst moving at speed. Participants are given a topographical map, usually a specially prepared orienteering map, which they use to find control points. Originally a training exercise in land navigation for military officers, orienteering has developed many variations. Among these, the oldest and the most popular is foot orienteering. For the purposes of this article, foot orienteering serves as a point of departure for discussion of all other variations, but almost any sport that involves racing against a clock and requires navigation with a map is a type of orienteering. Pirjo Seppä
Pirjo Seppä (born February 8, 1946 in Virolahti) is a Finnish orienteering competitor and World Champion. She participated on the Finnish winning team in the 1972 World Orienteering Championships, and also won a silver medal in the individual contest. Seppä was member of the team that won bronze medals in the relay in the 1968 World Orienteering Championships. She competed in the 1970 World Orienteering Championships, where she placed fourth in the individual contest. Female Orienteers
Female (symbol: ♀) is the sex of an organism that produces the large non-motile ova (egg cells), the type of gamete (sex cell) that fuses with the male gamete during sexual reproduction. A female has larger gametes than a male. Females and males are results of the anisogamous reproduction system, wherein gametes are of different sizes, unlike isogamy where they are the same size. International Orienteering Federation
The International Orienteering Federation (IOF) is the international governing body of the sport of orienteering. The IOF head office is located in Karlstad, Sweden. The IOF governs four orienteering disciplines: foot orienteering, mountain bike orienteering, ski orienteering, and trail orienteering. After the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, the International Orienteering Federation suspended the membership of the Russian Orienteering Federation. Raila Kerkelä ('' née'' Hovi; born 13 June 1941 in Vehkalahti) is a Finnish orienteering competitor. She received two medals at the 1966 World Orienteering Championships in Fiskars, a bronze medal in the individual contest (won by Ulla Lindkvist, 35 participants), and a silver medal in the relay with the Finnish team. Relay Race
A relay race is a racing competition where members of a team take turns completing parts of Race track, racecourse or performing a certain action. Relay races take the form of professional races and amateur games. Relay races are common in running, orienteering, swimming (sport), swimming, cross-country skiing (sport), cross-country skiing, biathlon, or ice skating (usually with a baton in the fist). World Orienteering Championships
The World Orienteering Championships (or WOC for short) is an annual orienteering event organized by the International Orienteering Federation. The first World Championships was held in Fiskars, Finland in 1966. They were held biennially up to 2003 (with the exception of 1978 and 1979). Since 2003, competitions have been held annually. Participating nations have to be members of the International Orienteering Federation (IOF). Originally, there were only two competitions: an individual race and a relay. In 1991, a short distance race (roughly 20–25 minutes) was added and a sprint race was added in 2001. The middle distance (roughly 30–35 minutes) replaced the short distance in 2003.
