Turnertown, Texas
Turnertown is an unincorporated community in Rusk County, located in the U.S. state of Texas. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 76 in 2000. It is located within the Longview, Texas metropolitan area. History Turnertown developed from another community further east, when it moved here after the roads were built. The East Texas Oil Field caused it to become a boomtown in 1930. Horace and Boger Turner, Sr., were given land grants to plat it. Its population was 1,500 with 25 businesses in 1936, a number which plummeted to 350 in the early 1940s, and up to the 1950s, it had three churches and a wide array of stores, oilfield supply houses, and machine shops. The population further declined to 150 in the mid-1960s, and by the end of that decade, it further declined to 76, where it remained through 2000. East Texas Oil Field
The East Texas Oil Field is a large oil and gas field in east Texas. Covering and parts of five counties, and having 30,340 historic and active oil wells, it is the second-largest oil field in the United States outside Alaska, and first in total volume of oil recovered since its discovery in 1930. Over of oil have been produced from it to-date. It is a component of the Mid-continent oil province, the huge region of petroleum deposits extending from Kansas to New Mexico to the Gulf of Mexico. Texas State Highway 42
State Highway 42 (SH 42) is a state highway located in the northeastern portion of the Texas in Gregg and Rusk Counties. This route was designated on December 12, 1962, over former SH 259 because of the creation of US 259 (which replaced cancelled SH 26) through Kilgore, which it intersected. Previous routes SH 42 was originally proposed on April 22, 1919, as a route from Greenville to Marshall. On August 21, 1923, the northwest terminus extended north to Sherman, replacing a section of SH 11. The section of SH 42 from Alba to Marshall was cancelled; SH 42 was instead rerouted to end in Mineola. On January 21, 1924, the section from Alba to Mineola was cancelled. 1991 Andover Tornado Outbreak
From April 26–27, 1991, multiple supercells across Oklahoma and Kansas led to a regional tornado outbreak. Forced by a potent trough and focused along a dryline, these distinct thunderstorms moved northeast through a moist and highly unstable environment. A total of 55 tornadoes were confirmed, many of which were strong, F2 or greater on the Fujita scale. A widely documented F5 tornado tore through Andover, Kansas, killing 17 people. Additional fatalities occurred from significant tornadoes in other portions of Kansas and Oklahoma, with 21 deaths recorded in total. An F4 tornado was detected by a mobile doppler weather radar team which observed winds up to at the top of the funnel, the first time winds of F5 intensity were measured by radar, and the highest winds recorded by radar at the time. Selman City is an unincorporated community in western Rusk County, Texas, United States. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 271 in 2000. It is located within the Longview, Texas metropolitan area. History S.A. Selman discovered oil on his property in the 1930s, making Selman City an oilfield-dominant community. Raymond A. Crawford served as the first postmaster in 1939. The post office also served Turnertown and Joinerville. Its peak population was 450 in 1947-48 with 7 businesses, then declined to 271 from 1980 through 2000 with two new businesses.
