Turks in Ireland ( tr, İrlanda Türkleri, ga, Turcaigh in Éirinn) are Turkish people who live in Republic of Ireland, Ireland having been born elsewhere or are Irish-born but have Turkish roots. By Turkish roots, this could mean roots linking back to Turkey, the island of Cyprus, or the communities of the Turkish diaspora. Population According to the 2016 Irish census, there are 1,043 Turkish nationals living in Ireland. During the time of a 2005 strike against the GAMA Turkish Construction Company, socialist news websites reported that they alone employed 900 to 2,000 Turkish workers. Cork (city)
Cork ( , from , meaning 'marsh') is the second largest city in Ireland and third largest city by population on the island of Ireland. It is located in the south-west of Ireland, in the province of Munster. Following an extension to the city's boundary in 2019, its population is over 222,000. The city centre is an island positioned between two channels of the River Lee which meet downstream at the eastern end of the city centre, where the quays and docks along the river lead outwards towards Lough Mahon and Cork Harbour, one of the largest natural harbours in the world. Turks in Germany, also referred to as German Turks and Turkish Germans (german: Türken in Deutschland/Deutschtürken; tr, Almanya'da yaşayan Türkler/Almanya Türkleri), are ethnic Turkish people living in Germany. These terms are also used to refer to German-born individuals who are of full or partial Turkish ancestry. British Turks ( tr, ) or Turks in the United Kingdom ( tr, ) are Turkish people who have immigrated to the United Kingdom. However, the term may also refer to British-born persons who have Turkish parents or who have a Turkish ancestral background. Turks first began to emigrate in large numbers from the island of Cyprus for work and then again when Turkish Cypriots were forced to leave their homes during the Cyprus conflict. Turks then began to come from Turkey for economic reasons. Recently, smaller groups of Turks have begun to immigrate to the United Kingdom from other European countries. Joseph O'Neill is an Irish novelist and non-fiction writer. O'Neill's novel ''Netherland'' was awarded the 2009 PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction and the Kerry Group Irish Fiction Award. Early life Joseph O'Neill was born in Cork, Ireland, on 23 February 1964. He is of half-Irish and half-Turkish ancestry. O'Neill's parents moved around much in O'Neill's youth: O'Neill spent time in Mozambique as a toddler and in Turkey until the age of four, and he also lived in Iran. From the age of six, O'Neill lived in the Netherlands, where he attended the Lycée français de La Haye and the British School in the Netherlands. Billy Osman Mehmet (born 3 January 1984) is a professional footballer who last played as a striker for of Northern Cyprus. Born in London, of English, Irish and Turkish Cypriot descent, he has played for the Republic of Ireland U21 team. Mehmet attended Bacon's College, Rotherhithe, he is a product of West Ham United Academy and was signed by the club at the age of eight and spent eleven years with West Ham United before transferring to the Scottish Premier League at the age of 19.
