Turkish Wheelchair Basketball Super League
The Turkish Wheelchair Basketball Super League ( tr, Türkiye Tekerlekli Sandalye Basketbol Süper Ligi, TTSB Süper Ligi) is the top-flight professional league for wheelchair basketball teams in Turkey with men and women players. Established in 1997, it is governed by the Turkey Disabled Sports Federation ( tr, Türkiye Bedensel Engelliler Spor Federasyonu, TBESF). Ten teams compete annually in the league. The last placed two teams are relegated to a lower league, the Turkish Wheelchair Basketball First League ( tr, Türkiye Tekerlekli Sandalye Basketbol Birinci Ligi, TTSB 1. Ligi) while the two top ranked teams of the lower league are promoted to the Super League. Galatasaray Wheelchair is with seven consecutive times the most successful team. Wheelchair basketball is basketball played by people with varying physical disabilities that disqualify them from playing a non-disabled sport. These include spina bifida, birth defects, cerebral palsy, paralysis due to accident, amputations (of the legs, or other parts), and many other disabilities. The International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) is the governing body for this sport. It is recognized by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) as the sole competent authority in wheelchair basketball worldwide. FIBA has recognized IWBF under Article 53 of its General Statutes. The IWBF has 95 National Organizations for Wheelchair Basketball (NOWBs) participating in wheelchair basketball throughout the world, with this number increasing each year. Basketball is a team sport in which two teams, most commonly of five players each, opposing one another on a rectangular court, compete with the primary objective of shooting a basketball (approximately in diameter) through the defender's hoop (a basket in diameter mounted high to a backboard at each end of the court, while preventing the opposing team from shooting through their own hoop. A field goal is worth two points, unless made from behind the three-point line, when it is worth three. A wheelchair is a chair with wheels, used when walking is difficult or impossible due to illness, injury, problems related to old age, or disability. These can include spinal cord injuries (paraplegia, hemiplegia, and quadriplegia), cerebral palsy, brain injury, osteogenesis imperfecta, motor neurone disease, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, spina bifida, and more.
