Turgut Reis Mosque (Balchik)
Turgut Reis Mosque ( bg, Тургут Реис джамия, tr, Turgut Reis Camii or ''Karagöl Camii'') is a mosque in Balchik, Bulgaria. Dragut (Turgut Reis) was caught in a strong storm in the Black Sea and prayed, saying that he will build a mosque when he gets rid of this storm. Balchik ( bg, Балчик ; ro, Balcic) is a Black Sea coastal town and seaside resort in the Southern Dobruja area of northeastern Bulgaria. It is in Dobrich Province, 35 km southeast of Dobrich and 42 km northeast of Varna. It sprawls scenically along hilly terraces descending from the Dobruja plateau to the sea, and is often called "The White City" because of its white hills. Etymology Balchik is named after the medieval ruler Balik, brother of Dobrotitsa, after whom the city of Dobrich is named. Dragut ( tr, Turgut Reis) (1485 – 23 June 1565), known as "The Drawn Sword of Islam", was a Muslim Ottoman naval commander, governor, and noble, of Turkish or Greek descent. Under his command, the Ottoman Empire's maritime power was extended across North Africa. Recognized for his military genius, and as being among "the most dangerous" of corsairs, Dragut has been referred to as "the greatest pirate warrior of all time", "undoubtedly the most able of all the Turkish leaders", and "the uncrowned king of the Mediterranean".
