Turceni Power Station
The Turceni Power Station is situated in Gorj County (South-Western Romania), on the banks of the Jiu River, halfway between the cities of Craiova and Târgu Jiu. It is Romania's largest electricity producer and one of the largest thermal power plants in Europe, having 4 units of 330 Watt#Megawatt, MW net each. But only 2 units are operational and 2 units, with the other 2 being mothballed thus totalling a capacity of 1230 MW. An eighth unit was not completed, and in fact was dismantled. Unit 6, was refurbished and mothballed awaiting modernization. The power plant is expected to decommision all remaining units by 203 The power station uses coal from the Jilț Coal Mine and the Tehomir underground mine. Ișalnița Power Station
The Işalniţa Power Station is a large thermal power plant located in Işalniţa, Dolj County having 1 generating unit of 315 MW. The power station formerly had a total of eight generation groups, three of 50 MW, one of 55 MW, two of 100 MW and two groups of 315 MW for a total of 1,035 MW but seven of these groups were decommissioned thus leaving only one 315 MW unit (Unit 7). A consortium formed by Alstom, Sumitomo and IHI Corporation was commissioned to upgrade the 315 MW group to 345 MW each at a total cost of US$315 million. There were plans to add another generating group of 500 MW at Işalniţa Power Station at a cost of US$750 million. Rovinari Power Station
The Rovinari Power Station is one of the largest electricity producers in Romania, having 4 groups of 330 MW each thus totaling an installed capacity of 1,320 MW. The power plant is undergoing modernization works, which will add a new 500 MW group at a total cost of US$600 million. After the modernization, the power plant will have a total installed capacity of 1,820MW. Lignite
Lignite, often referred to as brown coal, is a soft, brown, combustible, sedimentary rock formed from naturally compressed peat. It has a carbon content around 25–35%, and is considered the lowest rank of coal due to its relatively low heat content. When removed from the ground, it contains a very high amount of moisture which partially explains its low carbon content. Lignite is mined all around the world and is used almost exclusively as a fuel for steam-electric power generation.
