Tung Wah Group of Hospitals S. C. Gaw Memorial College () is a secondary school on Tsing Yi Island, Hong Kong. The school is surrounded by four resited villages, Tai Wong Ha, Yim Tin Kok, Lam Tin, and San Uk. The College is a co-educational school, accepting both boys and girls. The majority of students are residents on the island though there are many students from other parts of Hong Kong. Established by the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals, a registered charity, in 1984, the school is dependent upon government funding. Instruction is given in English, Cantonese (oral) and Chinese (written). History In the early 1980s, as part of the major new town development in the area, the Ha Chung Mei village area close to Tsing Yi Lagoon was reclaimed by the government. Tung Wah Group Of Hospitals (Education)
The Tung Wah Group of Hospitals (), with a history dating back to 1870, is the oldest and largest charitable organisation in Hong Kong. It provides extensive education and community services through 194 service centres spread across Hong Kong. Although Tung Wah Group of Hospitals is purely a charitable organisation today, it was originally an organisation that brought together the most influential Chinese magnates of Hong Kong in early colonial period. Blackpool Dance Festival
The 8-day Blackpool Dance Festival is the world's first and most famous annual ballroom dance competition of international significance, held in the Empress Ballroom at the Winter Gardens, Blackpool, England since 1920. It is also the largest ballroom competition: in 2013, 2953 couples from 60 countries took part in the festival. As of the early 21st century the festival is held in May. Po Leung Kuk Lo Kit Sing (1983) College () is a Hong Kong secondary school. Located in Cheung Hong Estate, Tsing Yi, New Territories, the subsidised secondary school was founded by Po Leung Kuk, a Hong Kong charitable organisation, in 1984. Anthony T. Gaw (8 November 1941 – 8 February 1999) was a Hong Kong property investor, the chairman and managing director of Pioneer Global Group, a Hong Kong Stock Exchange-listed conglomerate, principally involved in investment in properties and hotels, and related financing. Early life Gaw was born in Burma on 8 November 1941, and moved to Hong Kong in 1955 aged 13, with his family. Education Gaw received a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from Purdue University. He studied at Stanford University in California for one year, but finished his master's degree in electrical engineering at Purdue in 1964. He started a PhD at the University of California, Berkeley, but stopped after he met his future wife. Tsing Yi Tong
Tsing Yi Lagoon, or Tsing Yi Tong, was a lagoon on the east shore of Tsing Yi Island in Hong Kong. Its water came from a stream in the nearby valley of Liu To and its outlet was at Tsing Yi Bay. It acted as the shelter for nearby boat people, especially after large-scale land reclamation in Tsuen Wan and Kwai Chung. Once their boats moved into the lagoon, they never moved out. This was because their boats were too old for fishing far away. The lagoon was unable to escape the fate of development. Both the lagoon and the neighbouring Tsing Yi Bay, were reclaimed for new towns. The boat people were forced to give up their boats and were relocated to public housing estate on the island. After reclamation, the northern portion became Tsing Yi Estate and the remainder became temporary housing areas, which were later demolished. Chung Mei
Chung Mei is an area on the Tsing Yi Island in Hong Kong. It is also the name of a village on the island. Name Chung Mei means the end () of a stream (), in Cantonese. It might refer the stream of Liu To or a much shorter where the former villages sited. Both streams are located near the Tsing Yi Lagoon. History The original Chung Mei was located on the valley at the present-day Lam Tin Resite Village, below Tiger's Head (). Chung Mei was two villages. One was Ha Chung Mei (), namely "lower Chung Mei". Another was Sheung Chung Mei (), namely "upper Chung Mei". New Towns Of Hong Kong
The Hong Kong government started developing new towns in the 1950s to accommodate Hong Kong's booming population. During the first phase of development, the newly developed towns were called "satellite towns", a concept borrowed from the United Kingdom, of which Hong Kong was a colony. Kwun Tong, located in eastern Kowloon, and Tsuen Wan, located in the south-west of the New Territories, were designated as the first satellite towns, when the urban area in Hong Kong was still relatively small, restricted to the central and western parts of Kowloon Peninsula and the northern side of Hong Kong Island.
