Tunbridge Wells Power Station
Tunbridge Wells power station supplied electricity to the town of Royal Tunbridge Wells and the surrounding area from 1895 to 1968. The power station was built by the Tunbridge Wells Corporation which operated it until the Nationalization, nationalisation of the British electricity supply industry in 1948. History The Corporation applied in 1891 for a Provisional Order under the Electric Lighting Acts 1882 to 1909, ''Electric Lighting Acts''  to generate and supply electricity to the town of Tunbridge Wells. An Order was granted by the Board of Trade and was confirmed by Parliament through the ''Electric Lighting Orders Confirmation (No. 5) Act 1891'' (54 & 55 Vict. c. lxi). The power station in Quarry Road/ Medway Road was commissioned on 7 August 1895. The site was adjacent to the railway for delivery of coal. The British Electricity Authority (BEA) was established as the central British electricity authority in 1948 under the nationalisation of Great Britain's electricity supply industry enacted by the Electricity Act 1947. The BEA was responsible for the generation, transmission and sale of electricity to area electricity boards, and the development and maintenance of an efficient, coordinated and economical system of electricity supply. History The authority took over the operations of over 600 small public supply power companies, municipal authority electricity departments and the Central Electricity Board to form the BEA, which comprised a central authority and 14 area boards. Its scope did not include control of the North of Scotland Hydro-Electric Board, which had been founded in 1943 and remained independent of the BEA.
