Tun Lwin
Tun Lwin ( my, ထွန်းလွင်, also Htun Lwin; 17 January 1948 – 4 November 2019) was a Burmese meteorologist who warned of the approach of the deadly Cyclone Nargis in 2008, but was largely ignored by local people and authorities in the Irrawaddy Delta. He served as Director-General of Department of Meteorology and Hydrology. Tun was a familiar sight on television screens long before he became Myanmar's favorite and most followed weatherman. His nightly appearances as a weather forecasting official from the government's Meteorology and Hydrology Department usually right before the evening movie was due to start—used to annoy many viewers across Myanmar. Irrawaddy River
The Irrawaddy River ( Ayeyarwady River; , , from Indic ''revatī'', meaning "abounding in riches") is a river that flows from north to south through Myanmar (Burma). It is the country's largest river and most important commercial waterway. Originating from the confluence of the N'mai and Mali rivers, it flows relatively straight North-South before emptying through the Irrawaddy Delta in the Ayeyarwady Region into the Andaman Sea. Its drainage basin of about covers a large part of Burma. After Rudyard Kipling's poem, it is sometimes referred to as ' The Road to Mandalay'. As early as the sixth century, the river was used for trade and transport. Having developed an extensive network of irrigation canals, the river became important to the British Empire after it had colonized Burma. Myitsone Dam
The Myitsone Dam ( my, မြစ်ဆုံ တာတမံ ; 'Confluence Dam') is a large dam and hydroelectric power development project which was planned to be built in northern Myanmar (also known as Burma). The proposed construction site is at the confluence of the Mali and N’mai rivers and the source of the Irawaddy River (Ayeyawady River). the project is suspended, but China has been lobbying to revive the dam. Had the dam been completed according to plans in 2017 it would have been the fifteenth largest hydroelectric power station in the world. The dam, planned to be long and high, was to be built by the Upstream Ayeyawady Confluence Basin Hydropower Company. The company is a joint venture between the China Power Investment Corporation (CPI), the Burmese Government's Ministry of Electric Power, and the Asia World Company. Cyclone Giri
Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm Giri ( IMD designation: BOB 04, JTWC designation 04B, also known as Cyclone Giri) was a powerful tropical cyclone in terms of 1-minute sustained wind speed which caused catastrophic damage in parts of Myanmar in late October 2010. Originating from an area of low pressure over the Bay of Bengal on October 19, the system began as a weak depression 250 km (155 mi) south of Myanmar. Over the following few days, the depression underwent explosive intensification, reaching its peak intensity with winds of 195 km/h (120 mph 3-minute sustained) on October 22. Cyclone Giri made landfall roughly northwest of Kyaukpyu, shortly after peaking. Within hours of moving onshore, the system had substantially weakened. Myanmar Red Cross Society
Myanmar Red Cross Society (MRCS) was founded in 1937 and it was earlier called Burma Red Cross. It has its headquarters in Yangon. History In 1920, the Society came into existence as a branch of Indian Red Cross Society. When Burma was politically separated from India in 1937, it attained national status and was recognised as Burma Red Cross Society. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) recognised it as a National Society in 1939. The Society was admitted to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in 1946. The Burma Red Cross Act was enacted in 1959 and amended subsequently in 1964, 1971 and 1988. The 1959 (MRCS) Act confers responsibility to the National Society in implementing humanitarian activities and alleviating human suffering.
