Laurencetown or Lawrencetown is a small village in County Down, Northern Ireland. It sits on the River Bann, along the main road between the towns of Banbridge and Portadown. It is within the parish of Tullylish and covers the townlands of Knocknagore and Drumnascamph. In the 2011 Census it had a population of 956 people. In Irish, it is known as ''Baile Labhráis'' (Lawrence's Townland). Places of interest Lawrencetown House, close to the village, was built before 1834 and features a walled garden and extensive lawns stretching to the River Bann. Gilford, County Down
Gilford is a village in County Down, Northern Ireland. The village sits on the River Bann between the towns of Banbridge, Tandragee and Portadown. It covers the townlands of Loughans, Ballymacanallen and Drumaran. It had a population of 1,573 people in the 2001 Census. Gilford is within the Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon district. History Following the Irish Rebellion of 1641, Captain John Magill acquired land in the parish of Tullylish and founded Gilford, the name of the village being derived from "Magill’s ford". He afterwards became Sir John Magill and built Gill Hall in Dromore, County Down. The Magill lands passed by marriage to the Meade family, who were made Barons Gillford in 1766 and later earls of Clanwilliam. In the 19th century, Gilford grew and its population swelled when a linen mill was built. Many mill houses can still be found in the village. When the mill shut in 1986, the village waned. John O'Dowd
John Fitzgerald O'Dowd (born 10 May 1967) is an Irish Sinn Féin politician. He was a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly for Upper Bann since 2003. He was previously the Minister for Infrastructure from May to October 2022 and the Minister for Education in the Stormont Executive from 2011 to 2016. He briefly took on the duties of deputy First Minister in 2011 while Martin McGuinness ran in the 2011 Irish presidential election. Early career O'Dowd was born in 1967 in Tullylish, a rural community between Lurgan and Banbridge. He had trained as a chef before engaging in politics. He began his political career serving for 14 years as a councillor on Craigavon Borough Council and previously served as a school governor. Jane Whiteside
Jane Whiteside (5 February 1855 – 17 January 1875) was a notable New Zealand tightrope dancer, gymnast and magician. She was born in Tullylish, County Down, Ireland in 1855, to John Whiteside (a weaver) and Jane Whiteside. When she was young, her father joined the 65th Regiment and moved the family to New Zealand. They sailed on the ''Lancashire Witch'' on April 17, 1856, eventually landing in Wellington on July 21. The family moved around several times, eventually settling in Otahuhu. Whiteside first studied as an acrobat, tight-wire walker, and trapeze artist, but may have given it up as the result of an accident at age 17. She then turned to magic instead, after seeing the American magician Cora De Lamond (born Ursula Bush) perform. She eventually joined Frank Verten and Harry Seymour's theatre company Oxford Combination Troupe. John Butler Yeats
John Butler Yeats (16 March 1839 – 3 February 1922) was an Irish artist and the father of W. B. Yeats, Lily Yeats, Elizabeth Corbett "Lolly" Yeats and Jack Butler Yeats. The National Gallery of Ireland holds a number of his portraits in oil and works on paper, including one of his portraits of his son William, painted in 1900. His portrait of John O'Leary (1904) is considered his masterpiece (Raymond Keaveney 2002). Career Yeats was born in Lawrencetown, townland of Tullylish, County Down.
