Tulelake
Tulelake ( ) is a city in northeastern Siskiyou County, California, United States. The town is named after nearby Tule Lake. Its population is 902 as of the 2020 census, down from 1,010 from the 2010 census. Tulelake peace officers are authorized by state law, along with cooperation of the state of Oregon, to serve as and be recognized as peace officers within Malin, Oregon, along with the inverse being true for peace officers employed within Malin, wherein they are recognized as peace officers within Tulelake by the California Penal Code. History The first public auction of Tulelake land parcels took place on April 15, 1931. Over 100 lots were sold for prices ranging from $65 to $350. In 1937, the city was incorporated. Today there are over 400 housing units. Two World War II internment camps were located near Tulelake. Camp Tulelake was a federal work facility and War Relocation Authority isolation center located in Siskiyou County, five miles west of Tulelake, California. It was established by the United States government in 1935 during the Great Depression for vocational training and work relief for young men, in a program known as the Civilian Conservation Corps.California State Military Museum. The Tule Lake National Monument in Modoc County, California, Modoc and Siskiyou County, California, Siskiyou counties in California, consists primarily of the site of the Tule Lake War Relocation Center, one of ten concentration camps constructed in 1942 by the United States government to internment of Japanese Americans, incarcerate Japanese Americans forcibly removed from their homes on the West Coast. Archeological Site 4-SK-4, in Tulelake, California, near Macdoel, California, is a stratified archeological site that was a hunter-gatherer village on the west shores of the Lower Klamath Lake. The site is located in the heart of the Klamath Basin wetlands, west of Indian Tom Lake. It has also been known as Nightfire Island and as Sheepy Island. Modern Modocs have called the island ''Shapasheni'' (Shapash /xpni), meaning "where the sun and moon live", or "home of the sun and the moon. Malin is a city in Klamath County, Oregon, United States. The population was 805 at the 2010 census. History According to Lewis A. McArthur, Malin was settled September 30, 1909, on land that was formerly at the bottom of Tule Lake by 65 Bohemian families who named the new town for the Czech town Malin, now part of Kutná Hora. The settlers had found a large horseradish, and Malin is famous for that plant. McArthur also alludes to the discovery of fossils near Malin in 1925.
