Tubberclare
Tubberclare or Tubberclair () is a village and townland in County Westmeath, Ireland, between Ballymahon and Athlone. It lies from Athlone, on the N55 national secondary road, and north of Glasson. Toberclare is the official spelling of the name in English. Tubberclair is also the name of the surrounding parish, which includes the villages of Glasson and Ballykeeran. It borders Lough Ree on the Westmeath side and is reputed to be the geographical centre of Ireland with a monument depicting this in the centre of the parish. Name The exact meaning of in Irish is uncertain. While the first element refers to a well, the second element may refer to a board. Alternatively, it could mean the well of the plain, as Tubberclare is a largely flat, fertile plain. Glassan or Glasson (), also ''the Village of the Roses'' is a small village in rural County Westmeath, Ireland. It is north of Athlone, on the N55 national secondary road, not far from the shores of Lough Ree. History and layout The village was established and laid out to serve Waterstown House, the remnants of which is located on a hill south east of the village. The Harris-Temple family lived in Waterstown House which was built in the 1740s. The village is laid out as a straight street without a central square or common. At the south end the school was built to educate the children of the employees of the big house. A small river known as the River Tullaghan flows through the northern end of the village and then flows south to Killinure Lough, a part of Lough Ree. Christy O'Connor Jnr (born Christopher O'Connor; 19 August 1948 – 6 January 2016) was an Irish professional golfer. He is best known for defeating American Fred Couples at the 1989 Ryder Cup, helping Europe secure the trophy. Early life O'Connor was born in Knocknacarra, Ireland in 1948. Knocknacarra is a village in Salthill that is within County Galway. He was the son of Elizabeth (née Noone) and John O'Connor. The family farmed cattle and pigs near a golf club. Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach; short name '), commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA or Football is an Irish team sport. It is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the football up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). Lough Ree
Lough Ree () is a lake in the midlands of Ireland, the second of the three major lakes on the River Shannon. Lough Ree is the second largest lake on the Shannon after Lough Derg. The other two major lakes are Lough Allen to the north, and Lough Derg to the south. There are also several minor lakes along the length of the river. The lake serves as a border between the counties of Longford and Westmeath (both in the province of Leinster) on the eastern side and County Roscommon in the province of Connacht on the western side. The lake is popular for fishing and boating. The lake supports a small commercial eel fishery and is locally famous for its ''eels on wheels'' truck.
