Try Harder Records was a small independent record label that released music by Tired Irie, Blood Red Shoes, Foals, Jonquil, Redjetson, Blanket and Pioneers Press author/"talking songs" musician Adam Gnade. The label was founded in late 2005 by Alan English, guitarist with Youthmovies, Sim O'Farrell, and Simon Cope. Its final release was in 2009. Independent Record Label
An independent record label (or indie label) is a record label that operates without the funding or distribution of major record labels; they are a type of small- to medium-sized enterprise, or SME. The labels and artists are often represented by trade associations in their country or region, which in turn are represented by the international trade body, the Worldwide Independent Network (WIN). Many of the labels started as producers and distributors of specific genres of music, such as jazz music, or represent something new and non-mainstream, such as Elvis Presley in the early days. Blood Red Shoes
Blood Red Shoes are an English alternative rock duo from Brighton consisting of Laura-Mary Carter and Steven Ansell. They have released six full-length albums, '' Box of Secrets'' (2008), '' Fire Like This'' (2010), '' In Time to Voices'' (2012), ''Blood Red Shoes'' (2014), ''Get Tragic'' (2019) and '' Ghosts On Tape'' (2022) as well as several EPs and a number of singles. In 2014, they founded their own label, Jazz Life. Overview Formation Blood Red Shoes formed in late 2004, after Steven Ansell and Laura-Mary Carter's previous bands (Cat on Form and Lady Muck respectively) broke up and they decided to "have a jam". Foals (band)
Foals, stylised as FOALS, are a British rock band formed in Oxford in 2005. The band's current line-up consists of Greek-born lead vocalist and guitarist Yannis Philippakis, drummer and percussionist Jack Bevan and rhythm guitarist Jimmy Smith. Redjetson
Redjetson was a UK-based post-rock band. In 2002, they released a self-titled single on Steinbeck Records. They followed this up with a second release in 2003, again on Steinbeck Records. During 2004, the band toured extensively including a tour with Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies, whom they released a split 12" with on the Drowned In Sound Recordings Label. In January 2005, they released the album ''New General Catalogue'' on Drowned in Sound Recordings. The album collected the two songs from the previous split 12" along with a further nine songs including re-recordings of songs featured on their first two releases. They followed the album with a single of "This, Every Day, For The Rest Of Your Life". This also included making a music video. Pioneers Press was an independent publishing house founded in 2012 by Jessie Duke, the former owner and manager of Portland-based publisher Microcosm Publishing. Pioneers Press was based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, with its distribution center on a farm outside the town of Leavenworth, Kansas. According to its website, Pioneer Press focused "on survival and sustainability on the farm and in the city, in addition to health, gender, sexuality, social justice and food movements, and literary works by up-and-coming authors." Adam Gnade
Adam Gnade ( ) is a San Diego, California-born American musician and author currently living on a farm in rural Kansas. In his bio he defines his music as "talking-songs", which he describes as mixing the spoken vocals of talking blues songs with country music, Appalachian folk, noise, psychedelic folk and drone music influences. His work is issued as a series of records and books, which continue the stories of each other's characters and further develop plot-lines. Considered a regionalist writer, he writes mostly about San Diego, a bordertown city in Southern California, namely the area around the US/Mexico border, though many of his stories take place to the south of San Diego in the city of Tijuana, Mexico. Youthmovies
Youthmovies (previously known as YMSS or Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies) were an English rock quintet active from 2002 to 2010. They comprised Andrew Mears (guitar and vocals), Al English (guitar), Graeme Murray (drums), Stephen Hammond (bass) and Sam Scott (brass and keys). The Joy Formidable
The Joy Formidable is a Welsh people, Welsh alternative rock band, formed in 2007 in Mold, Flintshire, and currently based in London, England. The band consists of Rhiannon "Ritzy" Bryan (lead vocals, guitar), Rhydian Dafydd (bass guitar, bass, vocals) and Matthew James Thomas (drums, percussion).
