Truth, Justice And Healing Council
The Truth, Justice and Healing Council was established by the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference as a national co-ordinating body to oversee the church's engagement with the 2015-17 Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse and the pastoral and other ramifications that arose from the sexual abuse which it was called to investigate. Personnel The council was chaired by the Honourable Barry O'Keefe until his 2014 death. Australian Catholic Bishops Conference
The Australian Catholic Bishops’ Conference (ACBC) is the national episcopal conference of the Catholic bishops of Australia and is the instrumentality used by the Australian Catholic bishops to act nationally and address issues of national significance. Formation of the ACBC was approved by the Holy See on 21 June 1966. With around 5.4 million Catholics in Australia, the ACBC is an influential national body. Royal Commission Into Institutional Responses To Child Sexual Abuse
The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse was a royal commission announced in November 2012 and established in 2013 by the Australian government pursuant to the Royal Commissions Act 1902 to inquire into and report upon responses by institutions to instances and allegations of child sexual abuse in Australia. The establishment of the commission followed revelations of child abusers being moved from place to place instead of their abuse and crimes being reported. There were also revelations that adults failed to try to stop further acts of child abuse. The commission examined the history of abuse in educational institutions, religious groups, sporting organisations, state institutions and youth organisations. Barry O'Keefe
Barry Stanley John O’Keefe , (20 May 1933 24 April 2014) was an Australian judge and lawyer who served as a justice of the Supreme Court of New South Wales from 1993 to 2004 and the Commissioner of the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) from 1994 until 1999. He also served as the Mayor of Mosman. An influential member of Australia's Roman Catholic community, O'Keefe was appointed to the Truth, Justice and Healing Council in 2012, where he organized the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference's response to the findings of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. He remained the Chairman of the Truth, Justice and Healing Council until his death in 2014.
