Following a 10-year tenure with their record labels, funk band the Brand New Heavies released two greatest hits albums titled ''Trunk Funk'', a wordplay on the band's long standing elephant logo. Biography ''Trunk Funk – The Best of The Brand New Heavies'' was released 13 September 1999 in the UK on FFRR Records. It highlights the group's dance and pop oriented UK hits, with many appearing in remixed, edited, or radio-friendly formats. Because lead singer Siedah Garrett left the band in 1998, and previous lead N'Dea Davenport was out promoting N'Dea Davenport#Album, her solo debut, UK singer Carleen Anderson fills in on vocals for this album. Three new recordings appear here, "Try My Love," the Got To Give It Up, Marvin Gaye redux "Saturday Nite," and a cover of "Apparently Nothing," originally done by Anderson's former band Young Disciples. The Brand New Heavies is an acid jazz and funk group formed in 1985 in Ealing in west London. Centered around songwriters/multi-instrumentalists Simon Bartholomew and Andrew Levy, the core members of the group since its founding, Brand New Heavies are best known for a string of successful singles in the early 1990s featuring N'Dea Davenport as lead vocalist. Biography 1980s–1990s The Brand New Heavies began in the 1980s as an instrumental acid jazz group called Brothers International. The group came up with the Heavies name after signing their first record contract, borrowing from a liner note on a James Brown single declaring the artist "Minister of New Super Heavy Funk". Young Disciples was a British / American acid jazz band, formed in London in 1990 by Carleen Anderson ( vocals and keyboards), Marco Nelson (bass, guitar and organ) and Femi Williams (percussion and programming). Their most famous hit was the single "Apparently Nothin'" ( Talkin' Loud, 1991), which helped launch Anderson's solo career when the band disbanded. History The group formed in July 1990 after the American-born Anderson and her young son, Bobby, relocated to London, and met Nelson. They signed to Talkin' Loud Records and released their first single, "Get Yourself Together". It reached No. 68 in the UK Singles Chart in October 1990. Main Source was an East Coast hip hop group based in New York City/Toronto, composed of Toronto-born DJs and producers, K-Cut and Sir Scratch, and Queens MC and producer Large Professor. David Nichtern (born 19 February 1948) is an American songwriter and television composer, soundtrack artist and Buddhist teacher of the Shambala tradition of Chögyam Trungpa.
