There are 72 counties in the U.S. State of Wisconsin. The land that eventually became Wisconsin was transferred from British to American control with the 1783 signing of the Treaty of Paris. It was an unorganized part of the Northwest Territory until 1802 when all of the land from St. Louis north to the Canadian border was organized as St. Clair County. When Illinois was admitted to the union in 1818, Wisconsin became part of the Territory of Michigan and divided into two counties: Brown County in the northeast along Lake Michigan and Crawford County in the southwest along the Mississippi River. Iowa County was formed in 1829 from the Crawford County land south of the Wisconsin River. Brown County's southern portion was used to form Milwaukee County in 1834. Clark County, Wisconsin
Clark County is a county in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. As of the 2020 census, the population was 34,659. Its county seat is Neillsville. History By the early 1800s, the land and streams that are now Clark County were the hunting grounds of Chippewa, Dakota, Ho-Chunk and possibly Menominee peoples. In 1836 these Indians were joined by a party of French-Canadian fur traders who started a temporary post for the American Fur Company on the Black River's East Fork. The next White arrival was probably Mormon loggers in 1844, come to cut pine logs from the forests along the Black River and float them down to a sawmill at Black River Falls. From there the sawed wood would be floated down the river to be used in construction of the Mormon temple in Nauvoo, Illinois. They had camps on the river at what is called Mormon Riffle, a mile below Neillsville, near Weston's Rapids, and south of Greenwood. Dewhurst, Wisconsin
Dewhurst is a town in Clark County in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 323 at the 2010 census. The ghost town of Trow was located in the town. History The town was formed on November 15, 1901, and was originally named "Mound". However, the town was renamed in honor of Richard Dewhurst, a jurist and legislator. The first town meeting was held in April 1902. Geography The town of Dewhurst is located in southwestern Clark County, bordered to the south and west by Jackson County. The Black River, a tributary of the Mississippi River, flows across the southeast corner of the town; the northern half of Lake Arbutus, an impoundment on the river, is within the town. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which is land and , or 2.44%, is water.
