Troulloi
Troulloi or Troulli ( el, Τρούλλοι []) is a village in the Larnaca District, Cyprus. It is one of only four villages located within the United Nations Buffer Zone in Cyprus, United Nations Buffer Zone, the other three being Pyla, Athienou and Deneia. In 2011 Troulloi had a population of 1,175 people according to the Statistical Service of the Republic of Cyprus, 2014-04-17. The village's patron saint is Saint Mamas Saint Mammes (Mamas, Mammas, Mammet) of Caesarea ( el, Μάμας; french: Mammès; it, Mamante; es, Mamés; pt, São Mamede) was a child-martyr of the 3rd century, who was martyred at Caesarea. Larnaca District
Larnaca District ( el, Επαρχία Λάρνακας, tr, Larnaka kazası) is one of the six districts of Cyprus. Its capital is Larnaca. It is bordered on the east by Famagusta District, on the north by Nicosia District and on the west by Limassol District. A small part of the district was occupied by the Turkish army in 1974, and most of the occupied part is now ''de facto'' administered as part of Northern Cyprus's Lefkoşa District, with the remaining area near Pergamos being ''de facto'' administered by the Gazimağusa District. The communities of Melouseia, Tremetousia and Arsos lie in the occupied zone, while the municipal/community areas of Athienou, Troulloi and Pergamos are partially occupied. United Nations Buffer Zone In Cyprus
The United Nations Buffer Zone in Cyprus is a demilitarized zone, patrolled by the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), that was established in 1964 and extended in 1974 after the ceasefire of 16 August 1974, following the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, and the ''de facto'' partition of the island into the area controlled by the Republic of Cyprus (excluding the British Sovereign Base Areas) and the largely unrecognized Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in the north. The zone, also known as the Green Line (, ''Prasini Grammi''; ), stretches for from Paralimni in the east to Kato Pyrgos in the west, where a separate section surrounds Kokkina. The dividing line is also referred to as the Attila Line, named after Turkey's 1974 military intervention, codenamed ''Operation Attila''. Pyla
Pyla (; ) is a village in Larnaca District, Cyprus. It is one of only four villages located within the United Nations Buffer Zone, the other three being Athienou, Troulloi and Deneia. Pyla is located in the eastern part of the island, adjacent to the British Sovereign Base Area of Dhekelia. From a legal point of view, it is administered as all other areas controlled by the government of the Republic of Cyprus, but policed by UN peacekeepers. The village is special in the respect that it is the only settlement in Cyprus still inhabited by both its original Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot inhabitants. 850 of the inhabitants are Greek Cypriots and 487 are Turkish Cypriots. The village has three churches and one mosque. Pyla- Kokkinokremos is an archaeological site dating to the Late Bronze Age. History Pyla is among the oldest villages in Cyprus. Athienou
Athienou ( el, Αθηένου or , ) is a village in Larnaca District, Cyprus. It is one of only four villages located within the United Nations Buffer Zone, the other three being Pyla, Troulloi and Deneia. Today, Athienou has a population of around 6,500 people. Since 1990, it has been home to Davidson College's Athienou Archaeological Project. The town's city hall includes a museum of local history and culture that was established in 2008. Toponymy It is considered by many, that the name of the village Athienou, derived from the ancient Greek word, "Atta" (Greek: Αττα) or "Atha" (Greek: Αθθα), meaning ''large rock'', which characterized the rocky land of the village. According to another theory, the name derives from a Lusignan called ''Étienne'', who lived in the area, and the people who lived in the village were mentioning his house as "Etienne's Place" (Greek: "Στου Ετιένου", ''stou etiennou''), and in later years that changed into Athienou.
