A tropical cyclone is a rapidly rotating storm system characterized by a low-pressure center, a closed low-level atmospheric circulation, strong winds, and a spiral arrangement of thunderstorms that produce heavy rain and squalls. Hurricane Cora (1978)
Hurricane Cora was the first tropical cyclone of the 1978 Atlantic hurricane season to reach hurricane strength. Forming from a disturbance that exited the African coast on August 7, the storm moved at an unusually high forward speed for a cyclone in the Atlantic Ocean in August. The storm later reached hurricane strength and formed a well-defined eye that lasted only 12 hours before the eye rapidly lost organization for unknown reasons, though the post-season report on the storm mentions the possibility that its high speed caused the eye to dissipate. The storm moved west-southwestward, weakening before making landfall on the island of Grenada. The storm lost its circulation and became a tropical wave on August 12. The remnant crossed over Central America into the Pacific Ocean, where it reintensified, becoming Hurricane Kristy. The 1958 Pacific hurricane season saw thirteen tropical systems. It officially started on May 15, 1958, in the eastern Pacific and lasted until November 30, 1958. Typhoon Cora (1969)
Typhoon Cora, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Ibiang was a moderately strong typhoon that caused significant impacts in Japan and the Caroline Islands during the 1969 Pacific typhoon season. Tropical Depression 09W formed on August 12, 1969, 2 days after Typhoon Betty (Huling) dissipated. The depression intensified into Tropical Storm Cora on August 14 and had later intensified into Typhoon Cora 4 days later.
