Trooper Cobb's Grave
Trooper Cobb's Grave is a heritage-listed memorial at Corner Frederick Street & Mt Coot-tha Road, Toowong, City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It was designed and built by Andrew Lang Petrie in 1901. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 October 1992. History This memorial was erected in 1901 in Toowong Cemetery, over the grave of Trooper John Cobb of the 3rd Queensland Mounted Infantry, who died in July 1901 a few days after returning to Australia from active service in the South African War. He was 44 years old. Cobb had seen action at Elands River and Rhenoster Kop in South Africa. Like all Australian troops participating in the South African War (Boer War) of 1899-1902, Cobb was a volunteer. His grave is the only known South African War soldier's grave in Queensland. Toowong is a riverside suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Toowong had a population of 10,830 people. Andrew Lang Petrie
Andrew Lang Petrie (25 June 1854 – 1 April 1928) was a builder, stonemason and politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Personal life Andrew Lang Petrie was born in Brisbane on 25 June 1854,Queensland Registrar-General of Births, Deaths and Marriages the eldest son of John Petrie and Jane Keith McNaught. He married Margaret Aird, the daughter of John Aird and Margaret Ballantine, in Brisbane on 4 January 1877. The Queensland Heritage Register is a heritage register, a statutory list of places in Queensland, Australia that are protected by Queensland legislation, the Queensland Heritage Act 1992. It is maintained by the Queensland Heritage Council. Toowong Cemetery
Toowong Cemetery is a heritage-listed cemetery on the corner of Frederick Street and Mt Coot-tha Road, Toowong, City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It was established in 1866 and formally opened in 1875. It is Queensland's largest cemetery and is located on forty-four hectares of land at the corner of Frederick Street and Mount Coot-tha Road approximately four and a half kilometres west of Brisbane. It was previously known as Brisbane General Cemetery. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 31 December 2002. Although still used as a cemetery, it is a popular place for joggers and dog walkers, with its over-hanging fig trees and winding pathways. Battle Of Elands River (1900)
The Battle of Elands River was an engagement of the Second Boer War that took place between 4 and 16 August 1900 in western Transvaal. The battle was fought at Brakfontein Drift near the Elands River between a force of 2,000 to 3,000 Boers and a garrison of 500 Australian, Rhodesian, Canadian and British soldiers, which was stationed there to protect a British supply dump that had been established along the route between Mafeking and Pretoria. The Boer force, which consisted of several commandos under the overall leadership of Koos de la Rey, was in desperate need of provisions after earlier fighting had cut it off from its support base. Helidon is a rural town and locality in the Lockyer Valley Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , the locality of Helidon had a population of 1,059 people. A bandolier or a bandoleer is a pocketed belt for holding either individual bullets, or belts of ammunition. It is usually slung sash-style over the shoulder and chest, with the ammunition pockets across the midriff and chest.
