Trish Vaka
Patricia Amelia Vaka (born 17 May 1986) is a New Zealand professional rugby union player and professional boxer. In 2019, the Northland women's rugby team known as the Northland Kauri made their debut in the Women's Provincial Championship, now known as the Farah Palmer Cup. Vaka was named one of the original founding players for Northland in the Championships. In 2023, the Northland Kauri won their first Farah Palmer Cup Championship. As a professional boxer, she has fought some of the world's best heavyweight boxers including retired WBO light heavyweight champion Geovana Peres and IBF world heavyweight champion Lani Daniels. Okaihau College
In 1973 the Ōkaihau district high school in the Far North District of New Zealand was granted Form 1-7 (Year 7-13) status and became Okaihau College with Mr. Laurenson as first principal. At the same time a full primary school was completed around the Infant Block with Mr. N. Thomson becoming the first headmaster. At the end of 1973 there were 263 pupils attending the college and 219 at the primary school. Since then, the school has grown to the larger roll of 427 pupils. The decile rating is 2. Students are predominantly of Māori (67%), and European (28%) descent. The name "Ōkaihau" is a Māori name which means "Feast of the winds", which is relevant to the location of the area on a ridge over 200 m above sea level. This part of New Zealand was originally a dense tree landscape, and even today large old trees such as the puriri are found in the area of the school. Ngāpuhi People
Ngāpuhi (or Ngā Puhi) is a Māori iwi associated with the Northland region of New Zealand and centred in the Hokianga, the Bay of Islands, and Whangārei. According to the 2018 New Zealand census, the estimated population of Ngāpuhi is 165,201. This compares to 125,601 in 2001, 102,981 in 2006, and 122,214 in 2013. It is formed from 150 hapū/subtribes, with 55 marae. Despite such diversity, the people of Ngāpuhi maintain their shared history and self-identity. Te Rūnanga ā Iwi o Ngāpuhi, based in Kaikohe, administers the iwi. The Rūnanga acts on behalf of the iwi in consultations with the New Zealand Government. The Northland Rugby Union is the governing body for rugby union in Northland, New Zealand; Northland is a region of New Zealand that covers areas in the districts of Far North, Kaipara, and Whangārei. Established in 1920, they represent the Bunnings NPC side, Northland Taniwha, and Farah Palmer Cup side, Northland Kauri. It is also affiliated with the Blues Super Rugby franchise.
