Triple Crown (snooker)
The Triple Crown refers to winning the three most prestigious and historic tournaments in professional snooker: the World Championship, the UK Championship and the invitational Masters. Players who win all three tournaments over the course of their career are said to have won the Triple Crown. In January 2020, these tournaments were formally named the Triple Crown Series, with any player who has won all three gaining the right to wear an embroidered crown on their waistcoat reflecting their achievement. As of 2022, eleven professional players in snooker's modern era have won a career Triple Crown: Steve Davis, Terry Griffiths, Alex Higgins, Stephen Hendry, John Higgins, Mark Williams, Ronnie O'Sullivan, Neil Robertson, Mark Selby, Shaun Murphy and Judd Trump. 1982 Masters (snooker)
The 1982 Masters (officially the 1982 Benson & Hedges Masters) was a professional non-ranking snooker tournament that took place from Tuesday 26th to Sunday 31 January 1982 at the Wembley Conference Centre in London, England. As in 1981 12 players were invited to the tournament. Steve Davis prevailed in the final by defeating Terry Griffiths, who made his third consecutive Masters final, 9–5 to go with the World, UK and the English Professional Championship titles he had won in the past year. Jimmy White made his debut, the first of 26 consecutive appearances at the Masters. Tony Meo equalled the tournament highest break of 136, set by Terry Griffiths the previous year, in his 5–0 quarter-final win against Cliff Thorburn, and spiritedly pulled back from 0–5 to 4–5 before losing 4–6 in semi-final against Davis. 1981 World Snooker Championship
The 1981 World Snooker Championship, (also referred to as the 1981 Embassy World Snooker Championship due to sponsorship) was a ranking professional snooker tournament which took place from 7 April to 20 April 1981 at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, England. The tournament was the 1981 edition of the annual World Snooker Championship, a World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA)-sanctioned event which was first held in 1927. The 1981 tournament was the fifth consecutive world championship to take place at the Crucible Theatre since 1977. The total prize fund for the tournament was £75,000, of which £20,000 went to the winner. The defending champion and top seed in the tournament was Cliff Thorburn, who lost 10 to 16 in the semi-finals to Steve Davis. 1980 UK Championship
The 1980 UK Championship (also known as the 1980 Coral UK Championship for sponsorship reasons) was a professional non-ranking snooker tournament that took place at the Guild Hall in Preston, England, between 16 and 29 November 1980. This was the fourth edition of the UK Championship and the third staging of the competition in Preston. The event was sponsored by Coral for the third consecutive year. The televised stages were shown on the BBC from 22 to 29 November – the BBC's television coverage had been extended to eight days after the success of other competitions such as the World Championship. Steve Davis defeated Alex Higgins 16–6 in the final to win his first major title, after making his first major quarter-final in the previous year's championship. 1977 UK Championship
The 1977 UK Championship was a professional non-ranking snooker tournament that took place at the Tower Circus in Blackpool between 26 November and 3 December 1977. Mike Watterson instituted this new championship with sponsorship from manufacturers of the Super Crystalate balls. The inaugural UK Championship was held in Blackpool, but the following year the tournament moved to the Guild Hall in Preston, where it remained for twenty years. The event was won by Patsy Fagan, a London-based Dubliner, who had been a professional for less than a year. The final was televised and shown on BBC One's ''Grandstand'' programme. Retired English snooker player Joe Davis presented Fagan with the trophy. Fagan earned £2,000 out of the £7,000 total prize money. Patsy Fagan
Patsy Fagan (born 15 January 1951) is an Irish former professional snooker player. Having been runner-up in the 1974 English Amateur Championship, he turned professional in October 1976. He experienced early success with victories at the 1977 UK Championship and the 1977 Dry Blackthorn Cup but following a car accident, developed a psychological block when using the which affected his playing and he did not win another title. He lost his professional status in 1989 following a 2–9 playoff defeat by Brady Gollan and now works as a snooker coach. His highest career ranking was 11, in 1978/79. Early life and amateur career Fagan was born in Dublin on 15 January 1951, one of twelve children. He started playing snooker at the age of 12, and moved to London in 1968. The 1976 World Snooker Championship (also known as the 1976 Embassy World Snooker Championship for sponsorship purposes) was a professional ranking snooker tournament that took place at two venues. The 1976 Masters (officially the 1976 Benson & Hedges Masters) was a professional non-ranking snooker tournament that took place from Monday 26 to Friday 30 January 1976 at the New London Theatre in London, England. 10 players were invited for the competition. Mostly the same players from the 1975 tournament mostly competed but with Dennis Taylor replacing Bill Werbeniuk. 1975 runner-up Ray Reardon beat Graham Miles 7–3 in the final. At the age of 43 years and 114 days he was the oldest winner of the event until Stuart Bingham broke the record winning the title in 2020 aged 43 years and 243 days.
