Trionychoidea
Trionychia is a superfamily of turtles which encompasses the species that are commonly referred to as softshelled turtles as well as some others. The group contains two families, Carettochelyidae, which has only one living species, the pig-nosed turtle (''Carettochelys insculpta'') native to New Guinea and Northern Australia, and Trionychidae, the softshelled turtles, containing numerous species native to Asia, North America and Africa. These families likely diverged during the late Jurassic. The oldest known stem-trionychian is ''Sinaspideretes'' from the Late Jurassic of China. Systematics Except for those not assigned to a family, only living genera are listed here. *Family Carettochelyidae ** Subfamily Carettochelyinae *** Genus '' Carettochelys'' *Pan-Trionychidae ** Family PlastomenidaeOne or more basal lineages formerly believed to be a distinct family (fossil) ** Family Trionychidae ***Subfamily Cyclanorbinae **** Genus '' Cyclanorbis'' **** Genus '' Cycloderma'' ...

Late Jurassic
The Late Jurassic is the third epoch of the Jurassic Period, and it spans the geologic time from 163.5 ± 1.0 to 145.0 ± 0.8 million years ago (Ma), which is preserved in Upper Jurassic strata.Owen 1987. In European lithostratigraphy, the name "Malm" indicates rocks of Late Jurassic age. In the past, ''Malm'' was also used to indicate the unit of geological time, but this usage is now discouraged to make a clear distinction between lithostratigraphic and geochronologic/chronostratigraphic units. Subdivisions The Late Jurassic is divided into three ages, which correspond with the three (faunal) stages of Upper Jurassic rock: Paleogeography During the Late Jurassic Epoch, Pangaea broke up into two supercontinents, Laurasia to the north, and Gondwana to the south. The result of this break-up was the spawning of the Atlantic Ocean. However, at this time, the Atlantic Ocean was relatively narrow. Life forms of the epoch This epoch is well known for many famous types of dinosau ...

Trionyx
''Trionyx'' is a genus of softshell turtles belonging to the family Trionychidae. In the past many species in the family were classified in this genus, but today '' T. triunguis'', the African or Nile softshell turtle, is the only extant softshell still classified as ''Trionyx''. The other species still assigned to this genus are only known from fossils. ''T. triunguis'' is a relatively large, aquatic piscivore. Species The list of species follows a 2017 review of the Trionychidae by Georgios L. Georgalis and Walter G. Joyce. * '' Trionyx triunguis'' ( Forsskål, 1775) – African or Nile softshell turtle * † '' Trionyx pliocenicus'' Fucini, 1912 – Pliocene of Tuscany (Italy) * † '' Trionyx vindobonensis'' (Peters, 1855) – Miocene of Vienna (Austria) The following species are considered valid trionychid taxa, but with uncertain phylogenetic relationships. They are only referred to ''Trionyx'' provisionally due to its historic status as a wastebasket taxon Wasteba ...

Rafetus
''Rafetus'' is a genus of highly endangered softshell turtles in the family Trionychidae. It is a genus of large turtles which are found in freshwater habitats in Asia. Species According to most taxonomists, the genus ''Rafetus'' contains the following two species. *''Rafetus euphraticus'' – Euphrates softshell turtle *''Rafetus swinhoei'' – Yangtze giant softshell turtle A third species, ''Rafetus leloii'' ( synonym ''R. vietnamensis'' ), known commonly as the Hoan Kiem turtle, has been proposed as a species. It is considered a junior synonym of ''Rafetus swinhoei'' by most authorities, but some Vietnamese scientists insist the two forms are not identical. The last known individual at Hoan Kiem Lake was found dead on 19 January 2016. Taxonomy Cladogram As drawn by Walter G. Joyce, Ariel Revan, Tyler R. Lyson, and Igor G. Danilov (2009) Distribution * '' Rafetus euphraticus'': had been found at Tigris and Euphrates Rivers in Iraq, Syria, Turkey, and Khūzestān ...

Pelodiscus
''Pelodiscus'' is a genus of turtles in the family Trionychidae, the softshells. Based on genetic and morphological analysis there are seven valid species. They are native to Eastern Asia, ranging from the Amur region, south through China and Korea, as far south as Vietnam. Populations in Japan are thought to likely originate from historic human introductions. Phylogenetic studies have recovered a high diversity of ''Pelodiscus'' genotypes in China, some of which may correspond to distinct species. However, the millennia-old practice of farming ''Pelodiscus'' for consumption, especially in large-scale turtle farm Turtle farming is the practice of raising turtles and tortoises of various species commercially. Raised animals are sold for use as gourmet food, traditional medicine ingredients, or as pets. Some farms also sell young animals to other farms, e ...s since the late 20th century, is thought to threaten these lineages due to hybridization with farmed individuals. Spe ...

Pelochelys
''Pelochelys'' is a genus of very large softshell turtles in the family Trionychidae. They are found from peninsular India northeast to southern China, and south to Southeast Asia and New Guinea. The species in this genus, while still being freshwater turtles as with all Trionychidae, are unique for having significant salt tolerance and regularly entering near-coastal marine habitats. Species These three species are recognized as being valid:The Reptile Database. www.reptile-database.org. *'' Pelochelys bibroni'' (Owen, 1853) – southern New Guinea giant softshell turtle *''Pelochelys cantorii'' Gray, 1864 – Cantor's giant softshell turtle *''Pelochelys signifera'' Webb, 2002 – northern New Guinea giant softshell turtle ''Nota bene'': In the above list, a binomial authority In taxonomy, binomial nomenclature ("two-term naming system"), also called nomenclature ("two-name naming system") or binary nomenclature, is a formal system of naming species of living things b ...

Palea (genus)
The wattle-necked softshell turtle (''Palea steindachneri''), also commonly known as Steindachner's soft-shelled turtle, is an endangered Asian species of softshell turtle in the family Trionychidae. The species is the only member of the genus ''Palea''. Description ''P. steindachneri'' exhibits sexual dimorphism. Females of this freshwater turtle reach up to in straight carapace length, while males only reach up to . However, males have a longer tail than the females. Etymology The specific name, ''steindachneri'', is in honor of Austrian herpetologist Franz Steindachner.Beolens, Bo; Watkins, Michael; Grayson, Michael (2011) ''The Eponym Dictionary of Reptiles''. Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press. xiii + 296 pp. . (''Palea steindachneri'', p. 252). Geographic range ''P. steindachneri'' is native to southeastern China (Guangdong, Guangxi, Guizhou, Hainan, Yunnan), Laos, and Vietnam, but has also been introduced to Hawaii and Mauritius. Threats ''P. steindachn ...

Nilssonia (turtle)
''Nilssonia'' is a genus of softshell turtles (family Trionychidae) from rivers, streams, ponds, and lakes in South Asia and Burma. In many treatments, it is monotypic, with the single species Burmese peacock softshell (''N. formosa''). However, the supposed other genus of peacock softshells, ''Aspideretes'', is more closely related to ''N. formosa'' than had been believed. They differ only in the neural plates between the first pleural scale pair of the bony carapace, which are fused into one in ''N. formosa'' and unfused in the others. (2007). "Genetic evidence for wild-living ''Aspideretes nigricans'' and a molecular phylogeny of South Asian softshell turtles (Reptilia: Trionychidae: ''Aspideretes, Nilssonia'')". '' Zool. Scripta'' 36 (4): 301–310. (HTML abstract) Thus, it has been proposed to unite the two genera under the older name, ''Nilssonia''. As it seems, the closest living relatives of the Burmese peacock softshell are the Indian softshell turtle (''A./N. gangeticu ...

Dogania
The Malayan softshell turtle (''Dogania subplana'') is a species of softshell turtle in the family Trionychidae. It is monotypic in its genus. Geographic range It is found in Brunei, Indonesia, Java, Kalimantan, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Sabah, Sarawak, Singapore, and Sumatra.Das, Indraneil. 2006. ''A Photographic Guide to Snakes and Other Reptiles of Borneo''. Ralph Curtis Books. Sanibel Island, Florida. 144 pp. . ( (''Dogania subplana'') p. 136.) Description Adults may attain a carapace length of 35 cm (13.7 in). The head is large and muscular. The carapace is flat, and has straight sides. Juveniles are reddish on the sides of the neck, and have a few round black spots (ocelli) on the carapace. These markings become obscure as the turtles age. This turtle is a medium to dark brown-green. The nose is long and tapered as with members of the family, Trionychidae. It has eight pairs of pleuralia.

Apalone
''Apalone'' is a genus of turtles in the family Trionychidae. Species of ''Apalone'' are native to North America. Geographic range Most ''Apalone'' species are restricted to the United States, though the range of the spiny softshell, ''A. spinifera'', extends into southern Canada and northern Mexico. Taxonomy ''Apalone'' is a fairly new classification, resurrected by Meylan in 1987, assigned to North American species of the genus ''Trionyx''. They are still listed as ''Trionyx'' in some texts. (''Trionyx'' now refers specifically to certain softshell species found mainly in Africa.) Sexual dimorphism Turtles of the genus ''Apalone'' exhibit marked sexual dimorphism. In carapace length, females grow to about twice the size of males. In males, the claws on the front feet are longer than those on the back feet, but in females, the claws on the back feet are longer. In males, the stout tail extends well beyond the posterior edge of the carapace, but in females, the relatively thinn ...
