Trial Of Anders Behring Breivik
The trial of Anders Behring Breivik, the perpetrator of the 2011 Norway attacks, took place between 16 April and 22 June 2012 in Oslo District Court. Breivik was sentenced to 21 years of preventive detention on 24 August 2012. 170 media organisations were accredited to cover the proceedings, involving some 800 individual journalists. The main question during the trial became the extent of the defendant's criminal responsibility for these attacks and thereby whether he would be sentenced to imprisonment or committed to a psychiatric hospital. Two psychiatric reports with conflicting conclusions were submitted prior to the trial, leading to questions about the soundness and future role of forensic psychiatry in Norway. Geir Lippestad (born 7 June 1964) is a Norwegian lawyer, politician and social activist. He is known for his involvement in several high-profile legal cases, and for starting the political party ''Sentrum'' in 2020. As a criminal appellate lawyer, he first became known in 2001 when he acted as defence counsel following the murder of Benjamin Hermansen. In 2011 he became known internationally for being the lead counsel for the perpetrator of the 2011 Norway attacks, Anders Behring Breivik. Inga Bejer Engh (born 31 December 1970) is a Norwegian jurist, former prosecutor, and present Children's ombudsman. Together with Svein Holden she prosecuted terror suspect Anders Behring Breivik in the 2012 trial following the 2011 Norway attacks. Early life and career Engh is educated Candidate of Law. Following law school she worked with international law for the United Nations in New York City. Svein Holden (born 23 August 1973) is a Norwegian lawyer having prosecuted several major criminal cases in Norway. Together with prosecutor Inga Bejer Engh Holden prosecuted terror suspect Anders Behring Breivik in the 2012 trial following the 2011 Norway attacks. Born in Fredrikstad, Holden is educated Candidate of Law from the University of Oslo in 1999. He then worked one year for the Ministry of Justice and the Police. Between 2001 and 2005 he worked at Oslo Police District. Since 2006 he has worked as prosecutor at the Public Prosecutors of Oslo.
